Electric Scooters & Motorcycles: Shared Battery Consortium

Four key players in the two-wheeler world have just signed an agreement to develop replaceable batteries for electric vehicles.

Following the signing of a letter of intent on March 1, 2021, Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM, Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio and Japanese firms Honda and Yamaha have signed an agreement to form a new consortium. This union was baptized” Replaceable Battery Motorcycle Consortium ”(SBMC) will allow the development of a common standard for batteries.

This agreement on electric mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quads is truly revolutionary. The consortium aims to develop solutions to address compatibility issues at the battery level as well as recharging infrastructure.

Four partner companies want to achieve this goal by:

  • Development of technical specifications common to replaceable battery systems.
  • Confirmation of normal use of these battery systems
  • Promotion and standardization of the general characteristics of the consortium within the European and global standardization frameworks.
  • Expanding the use of common characteristics of the consortium on a planetary scale.

Accelerate the development of electromobility

By standardizing standards for electric vehicle batteries to make it easier to replace, this new consortium could accelerate the development of electric mobility across the planet. The four companies that make up the consortium are inviting all players interacting with the e-mobility sector to join their alliance. This will enrich SBMC's expertise and promote the proliferation of standardized replaceable batteries in the coming years, they said.

« We hope that the SBMC consortium will attract companies that share the same philosophy and want to make positive changes in the electric vehicle sector.“Said Takuya Kinoshita, director of commercial operations for Yamaha Motor. ” At Yamaha, we are convinced that this alliance will standardize various standards and specifications, promoting the benefits of electric vehicles around the world..
