Electric scooters will soon be taxed in Paris

In an effort to better control these devices offered in the "free float", the Paris mayor's office will launch a payment system for operators by the summer.

End of anarchy! Scooters, scooters or e-bikes. As it crumbles under these self-service cars, which are sometimes left somewhere in parking lots or on sidewalks, the city of Paris intends to clean up some order in this giant mess.

If the success of these devices confirms the relevance of last mile mobility solutions, an organization is needed in line with the municipality that wishes to manage this new activity through taxes. Targeting various operators offering free floating solutions in the capital, this levy aims to get stakeholders to pay for the use of the public domain.

In practice, the amount of this fee will depend on the type of vehicle and the size of the vehicle fleet. Operators will have to pay € 50 to € 65 per year for each scooter deployed and € 60 to € 78 for a scooter requiring their fleet to be declared. For a bike, the amount will range from 20 to 26 euros.

This measure is expected to allow the town hall to generate new revenue by summer in order to better control these devices. In particular, it is planned to create 2500 allocated parking spaces. As for carriers, we fear that this new device will punish the market by favoring the big players over the smaller ones.

On a European scale, Paris is not the first city to implement this royalty principle. It remains to be seen if this will affect the rental cost for the user...
