Electric bike: how much does it cost to recharge?

Before you start buying your new electric bike, you want to anticipate all the costs: consumption, overhaul and repair, various accessories, insurance… Here is a simple way to calculate the price of recharging your electric battery.

A cost that depends on several factors

The battery capacity and the average price of electricity will affect the cost of full recharging. An electric bicycle battery has an average capacity of 500 Wh, or around 60 kilometers of range. In France in 2019, the average price per kWh was € 0,18. To calculate the price of a recharge, simply multiply the capacity in kWh by the price of electricity: 0,5 x 0,18 = 0,09 €.

Check the battery capacity of your electric bike on the user manual and refer to the following table if you want to know the exact price of your recharge:

Battery capacityCost of a full recharge
300 Wh0,054 €
400 Wh0,072 €
500 Wh0,09 €
600 Wh0,10 €

If you want to calculate the total price of recharging your electric battery over a year, you have to take into account the frequency with which you use your bike, the number of kilometers traveled and the battery life.

In the end, whether you are an occasional rider or a frenzied cyclist, recharging your battery is quite inexpensive and doesn't really add up to the overall budget of buying an electric bike. What costs the most is the vehicle, then the occasional replacement of certain parts (brake pads, tires, and the battery approximately every 5 years).
