E-bikes: Coming soon with anti-theft markings?

Linked to the national owner file, this identification system for electric and classic bicycles could become mandatory in 2020. "

While registration is not mandatory for cycles today, owners may soon be required to apply mandatory labeling. According to a draft mobility policy published on the Context website, the government wants to better control the tens of thousands of bicycles and e-bikes in circulation. How? 'or 'What? By requiring owners to attach a code “under legible, indelible, non-removable and protected from unauthorized access form ”.

This code, which could be decoded with an optical sensor, would eventually act as a license plate for bicycles and would be linked to a national file, allowing the bike owners to be identified.

Fight against theft

For the government, the main goal is to simplify the fight against theft and concealment, while offering the possibility of easier penalties for cyclists who do not comply with the law, in particular with regard to parking.

This mandatory labeling, already offered on an optional basis by some specialist companies such as Bicycode, will be confirmed in the coming months in discussions on the mobility bill. If its implementation is fixed in the final text, labeling will become mandatory from 2020. Owners of new bicycles, electric or classic, will have twelve months to comply with the law by tagging their two-wheeled bikes.

And you ? What do you think of this measure? Should this be imposed or left to the discretion of the owners?
