Engine Encyclopedia: PSA/BMW 1.6 THP (Petrol)

Incredibly modern, technically advanced, fuel efficient gasoline unit created in collaboration with two major companies. This can only mean one thing - great success. And it has been achieved, but what users can expect.

Shortly after its premiere, the engine, known as the 1.6 THP, was awarded in the international "Engine of the Year" poll and for 10 years won the main award in the engine category from 1,4 to 1,8 liters. It's hard not to call it a success, but only for producers.

The motor has been installed in various models of the PSA concern (Citroen and Peugeot), as well as in BMW and Mini cars. It was meant to replace older, larger naturally aspirated engines and did an excellent job of offering very good performance thanks to its high torque (even from 1200-1400rpm). Variable valve timing with turbocharging and direct injection - even with dynamic driving - can settle for a small amount of fuel. The power developed by this engine is usually between 150 and 225 hp, but the most powerful versions of PureTech develop up to 272 hp. Unfortunately, that's where the benefits end.

The main problem, especially in the engines of the first series (until 2010-2011) faulty timing belt tensionerwhich runs on oil from the engine lubrication system. The tensioner causes the timing chain to stretch, which in turn negatively affects the operation of the variable valve timing system and the entire engine, which leads to improper combustion of the fuel, which results in the formation of a large amount of carbon deposits. He creates it all vicious circle of problemswhere one controls the other and the other controls the next, and so on.

Effects? A stretched timing chain, carbon deposits or excessive oil burnout are even the smallest problems. Worse when it comes to jammed camshafts or head damage. Sometimes piston rings are so damaged by soot that they scratch the surface of the cylinder, and the combustion of oil can no longer be stopped.

Is it a bad engine? Yes. Can you live with it? Also. So what do I need? Conscious user and approach as a professional unit. Frequent oil changes, careful maintenance and the fastest possible response to the slightest malfunction eliminates most problems. It is important to clean the engine from carbon deposits at least every 50-60 thousand. km, and the timing chain should be changed every 100 thousand. km.

Advantages of the 1.6 THP engine:

  • Outstanding performance (torque curve and power)
  • Very low fuel consumption (especially powerful variants)

Disadvantages of the 1.6 THP engine:

  • Numerous and costly glitches
  • Neglect causes great damage
  • Complex construction
  • All the modern (read: expensive) solutions that gasoline engines have
