Encyclopedia of engines: Volvo 2.4 (gasoline)

It is one of the most durable petrol units offered after 2000. Despite the 5-cylinder design and high power, it can be found even in a small car. Choosing the right version guarantees almost complete reliability and incredible durability. Also on HBO.

Volvo motor with the designation B5244 was used in 1999-2010.so relatively small for the life of one engine, especially such a successful one. It can be assumed that it was created too late and, unfortunately, was killed by emission standards. A characteristic feature is the power of 2,4 liters, obtained by 5 cylinders. It is a member of the modular block family with aluminum construction. They have forged connecting rods, belt driven overhead camshafts and variable timing. In general, it is characterized by high strength, Therefore, on the basis of naturally aspirated versions with a capacity of 140 and 170 hp. Bi-Fuel or supercharged versions (designation T) from 2003 to 193 hp were created, leading, among other things, to the sports models S260 and V60 T70.

Naturally aspirated versions work well in the S80, S60 or V70 and good performance in the smaller C30, S40 or V50. With the right driving technique, they do not consume as much fuel, but despite this, it is difficult to go below 10 l / 100 km. Turbo versions are even better, with excellent parameters, but they consume a lot of gasoline. Especially in combination with an automatic transmission. Therefore, users are very willing to use autogas installations that do not pose any threat to the unit, which is equipped with hydraulic valve compensators.

Apart from the defects that have arisen as a result of operation (leaks, old electrics, intake pollution, worn ignition coils), nothing special causes problems, except for one exception. repeatable and a typical malfunction is the failure of the Magnetti Marelli throttle, which was used until 2005. Newer variants already have a Bosch throttle body which is virtually maintenance free. Unfortunately, Magnetti Marella repairs are quite expensive, and changing the throttle body to a new one is quite dizzying.

The big advantage of the engine is good access to spare parts, although sometimes expensive. In some cases it is better to buy the original, usually worth 50 to 100 percent. more than a replacement. Replacing the entire timing drive can cost up to PLN 2000 for the parts alone. Every 2.4 version with a manual transmission has a dual-mass wheel costing up to PLN 2500, although it is very durable. You can also find a hard handlebar and heavy duty clutch kit for some varieties, but this is only recommended for naturally aspirated ones.

Advantages of the 2.4 engine:

  • Enormous durability (motor does not break down during normal operation)
  • Low bounce rate
  • Good performance of supercharged versions
  • High LPG Tolerance

Disadvantages of the 2.4 engine:

  • Throttle valve damage before 2005
  • Relatively expensive design to maintain
  • High fuel consumption
