Energy consumption at home after purchasing a plug-in hybrid: more at home, MUCH cheaper to drive [Reader Tomasz]

The reader, Mr. Tomasz, lives in a one-family home with his wife and two children. He bought a plug-in hybrid in 2018 and an electric car in 2019. And now he has compiled a report for us on energy consumption over the past few years. Here is his first part, in which he buys a plug-in hybrid and switches to the G12as promotional rate - so we are talking about the turn of 2018/2019.

After purchasing a pure electric vehicle, we moved on to the wear analysis in part 2/2. We also examined the impact of price increases on the G12as tariff on operating profitability:

> Energy consumption at home after purchasing a plug-in hybrid AND an electrician: consumption remains the same, prices rise, but ... [Reader part 2/2]

How do electricity bills rise when a plug-in hybrid car is replaced?

  • How do electricity bills rise when a plug-in hybrid car is replaced?
    • Home energy consumption increases threefold and management costs sixfold

Mr. Tomasz lives near Warsaw, so he travels to the capital for work, shopping, etc. He had three cars:

  • Toyota Auris HSD, a hybrid of the C-segment with normal combustion, which it replaced with the BMW i3,
  • Mitsubishi Outlandera PHEV, a plug-in hybrid C-SUV with an electric range of approximately 40 kilometers (from May 2018),
  • BMW i3 94 Ah, i.e. pure electric B-segment (from September 2019).

After purchasing the Outlander PHEV (May 2018), the reader switched from the G11 fare to the G12as anti-smog fare. As a result, during the day he paid about PLN 0,5 / kWh for electricity, at night - less than PLN 0,2 / kWh. And that includes the transmission.

Home energy consumption increases threefold and management costs sixfold

Two periods are relevant here: autumn winterwhich ran from September 2018 to March 2019, and spring Summer from March to September 2019. Before he decided to buy a plug-in car, he consumed 2 kWh per year. Now with the purchase of the Outlander PHEV, consumption has increased to:

  • 4 kWh in autumn and winter, of which 150 kWh at night,
  • 3 kWh in spring and summer, of which 300 kWh at night.

Thus, from a typical 2 kWh consumed per year, consumption increased to 400 kWh, that is, by more than 7 percent. In winter, there were more of them, because the car consumed more energy, if only because of the need to heat the interior (gas heating in the house). More than 450 percent of the previous rate sounds awful, but when you look at the bills, it's not that big of a deal.

Our Reader charged the car mainly at night, but also during the day when needed, and consumed 3 kWh of energy throughout the year. These 3 kWh of energy cost him 880 zlotys.... Its Outlander PHEV requires an average of about 20 kWh / 100 km when driving slowly around town, so for 776 zlotys traveled about 19,4 kilometers.... This gives the cost of travel PLN 4 per 100 km (!).

> Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - how much does it cost per month and how much can you save on gasoline? [Reader Tomasz]

Operation of a hybrid car, even with the installation on liquefied gas, during this period will cost at least 14-15 zlotys / 100 km. When driving on gasoline, this will be from about PLN 25 per 100 km and more.

It should be added that the Outlander PHEV covered a much greater distance in the described time. The part was fueled part using free energy available at charging stations in Warsaw.

End of part 1/2. In the second part: the impact of the electric car on household energy consumption - that is, we move to 2019 and 2020, when the anti-smog tariff was very limited:

> Energy price in anti-smog tariffs [Wysokie Napiecie] is rising. The same blow to the nose with subsidies for electric vehicles?
