EPB - electric parking brake. What benefits does it have? Check out how it works and how to use it!

The electric parking brake replaces the standard lever, freeing up space inside the vehicle. The car has become more comfortable, and at the same time, the new element works just as efficiently as the old system. We present the most important information about this technology.

Electric parking brake - what is it?

EPB is a technology that could completely replace the manual lever in the future. The efficient operation of the electrified variety is based on actuators. They are located in the brake located at the rear, as well as in the control unit.

EPB (English) Electric parking brake) is not the only term for this novelty. You can also find the abbreviations APB, EFB or EMF - they also refer to the electric parking brake. Among the largest suppliers of this equipment are the brands ZF TRW, Bosch and Continental Teves.

How is the electric version different from the classic brake?

Using a standard handbrake, the driver could use a hand or pedal to engage or disengage a mechanical device that actuated the brakes in the rear system via cables. The force acting on the drum or disc effectively immobilized the vehicle.

The automatic brake is based on three electrical systems, the common feature being the replacement of a mechanical lever with an electrically operated operating unit. It is worth learning more about available solutions and systems.

Cable Puller System - cable pulling system

The first variation is called the cable laying system. How does the cable stripping system work? It tensions the mechanical cable tensioner, which creates a tension force (same as in the conventional rear brake version). This EPB variant can be integrated into the current vehicle design - you can freely choose the installation location. The advantage is also that said system works with drum and disc brakes.

Motor on Caliper System - an electric motor in the brake caliper system

Small gearmotor assemblies, also known as direct acting actuators, are mounted on the brake caliper and actuate the rear caliper brake pistons. Thus, they create the necessary locking force. The Motor on Caliper system is also distinguished by the fact that it does not have cables. Easily integrated into the vehicle. Only works with disc brakes.

Electric drum brake - how does it work?

Electric drum brake is a technology that is used for heavy duty vehicles. How does this electric parking brake option work? The motor-reduced unit activates the drum brake, which creates downforce and provides braking. Thanks to this, there is no need to pull cables.

Is using an electric parking brake a good solution?

The electrified brake is a big step towards the introduction of solutions that would fully automate the operation of the braking system. The use of this technology certainly improves driving comfort. This can make starting off a lot easier when the vehicle is uphill.

The use of an electric parking brake also affects the interior design of the car. Cars that create extra space by eliminating the standard hand lever may be more comfortable and have more attractive designs. A push-button electric parking brake will also be easier to use.
