Are there alternatives to the center squares?
Central fields | |
The center marker is an effective tool for determining the center of a piece of wood. It is used similarly to the center square, but a steel blade that runs diagonally across the tool marks the work so the user does not need to use a pencil or scriber. The center marker can be used on a square stock, not just a cylindrical stock.
To use, simply place the workpiece between the tool handles and tap the surface of the workpiece with a hammer. Then turn the workpiece and tap again. The blade will make two diagonal lines. As in the case of the central square, the center of the workpiece will be the intersection point of the two lines.
If you have access to a milling machine or a drilling machine, there are a couple of other devices that can be mounted on the spindle and used to determine the center of parts.
The center finds what is seen
The center finder set consists of four styli that are used to find centers, edges or designate elements (see fig. What is a central finder?)
Edge search | |
Although edge finders are primarily used to locate the edge of a part, they can also be used to find the center of a part. See How to Use an Edge Finder to Find the Center of a Round Part
Round bar center finder
While the center square can be used to find the center at the edge of a part, a round stem finder can accurately find the center of the middle of a part. To use, insert the tool shank into the drilling machine. When both Y legs rest on the stock headstock and the two points match, the drill chuck is directly above the center of the headstock. |
