Officers can only check the legitimacy of software installed in a car's GPS navigation when they have a reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed.
An accurate and up-to-date map is the most important, but also the most expensive element of a car satellite navigation system. There is no shortage of drivers using illegal GPS navigation software. It is a crime.

Illegal software detection most often occurs during traffic control by the police, traffic police or customs. Checking the legality of software installed in car GPS navigation is a search and is associated with special legal requirements. The basis for a search of a vehicle must be a reasonable suspicion of a crime and the assumption that the vehicle contains things that can serve as evidence in the case or are subject to seizure (in this case, illegal software). If there are no signs of software piracy, police or customs officers are not allowed to search the vehicle during a routine roadside inspection.
“According to the Code of Criminal Procedure, the police can conduct searches on the basis of a court or prosecutor's decision,” says Jakub Brykczyński from the law firm Brykczyński i Partnerzy. - If it was not possible to obtain such a decision and an urgent accident occurred, the police are obliged to present an order from the head of the police department, headquarters or service card. However, in such a situation, the court or the prosecutor's office must approve the search within seven days, Brikciński adds.
If the navigation software is found to be illegal, authorities may seize the device as evidence in a case.
The police and other authorities have limited ability to search a car and its GPS navigation and therefore rarely conduct such checks. However, the use of illegal GPS software is a crime punishable by severe criminal and financial penalties. It is worth investing in a license, because only such a program provides a smooth use of navigation.
To avoid problems with proving the legitimacy of the software, you should keep the documentation confirming the purchase of a license for the program: license agreement, software media, invoice or receipt. However, it is not necessary to have such documentation in the car along with the navigation.
