We think Hyundai Group's Vision FK concept looks terribly familiar.

Hyundai has revealed additional details about its hydrogen sports car, including that it's a collaboration with electric supercar maker Rimac, but on closer inspection it looks more familiar than it first appeared.

The silhouette of the Vision FK is similar to a familiar Hyundai Group car, namely the Kia Stinger sports sedan.

This is reflected in its lightweight profile, wide stance and even the window line with large details including side vents and a rear spoiler. While this is far from a confirmation that this is some heavily modified Stinger, the resemblance is undeniable.

It definitely has a wider track than the Stinger and has two doors to make room for its rear hydrogen and electric running gear, as well as additional air intakes or ventilation around the rear axle.

Hyundai also revealed that the Vision FK's electric drive components are made in collaboration with Rimac and will also come with advanced torque vectoring features thanks to the twin-motor setup, although both are located on the rear axle.

Hyundai says it will have over 500kW, 0-100km/h in less than four seconds and a range of over 500km. Curiously, it also combines a hydrogen fuel cell stack with plug-in hybrid components.

Hyundai Group head of R&D Albert Beirmann acknowledged that the FK concept "can't beat the BEV at the moment" in terms of performance, "but we're only at the beginning - there will come a time when competition in motorsport will be very tough - it's really tough." the exercise".

“This is an additional situation, we think that competition in the field of sports cars will accelerate development,” he added.

Mr. Beirmann noted the "packaging issues" of hydrogen fuel cell technology as one of the hurdles to overcome, although the systems could theoretically be lighter than their electrical counterparts. He referred to the idea that Vision FK would be shown again in the near future.

After years of sluggish sales despite a positive response from the press and enthusiasts, the fate of the Kia Stinger still seems sealed as the plant that builds it in Korea will be converted for electrified vehicles. Time will tell if the Hyundai Group will build on the Stinger heritage for this potential follow-up model in its next emissions-free chapter.

For now, the brand has confirmed that it will no longer be developing any new combustion engine platforms and components with the goal of electrifying its entire range by 2028, either in battery or hydrogen fuel cell form.
