Euro NCAP - car safety rating

The European New Car Assessment Program, or Euro NCAP for short, has been conducting crash tests since 1997, measuring the level of reliability of a car.

According to the results of these tests, each model is awarded points for various indicators:

  • Adult - protection of adult passengers;
  • Child - protection of children;
  • Pedestrian - protection of a pedestrian in the event of a car collision;
  • Safety Assist is a vehicle security system.

Standards and approaches are constantly changing as safety requirements for cars on European roads are getting tougher all the time.

Euro NCAP - car safety rating

It should be noted that in the Euro NCAP itself, ratings are not compiled as such. On the official website of the commission, you will not see the usual TOP-10 or TOP-100. But on the other hand, you can easily find many brands of cars and compare them with others. Based on this analysis, it can be concluded that such and such a model is more reliable and safe.

Ratings 2014

In 2014, 40 new models were tested.

All cars are divided into categories:

  • midgets - Citroen C1, Hyundai i10;
  • small family - Nissan Qashqai, Renault Megane;
  • big family - Subaru Outback, C-class Mercedes, Ford Mondeo;
  • official - in 2014 only Tesla Model S was tested, in 2013 - Maserati Ghibli, Infiniti Q50;
  • small / large minivan;
  • small all-wheel drive SUV - Porsche Macan, Nissan X-Trail, GLA-class Mercedes, etc.;
  • large SUV - in 2014 they tested Kia Sorento, in 2012 - Hyundai Santa Fe, Mercedes M-class, Land Rover Range Rover.

Separate classes are roadsters, family and commercial vans, pickups.

That is, we see that the tests are carried out exactly in the year of the release of a new or updated model. Each indicator is indicated as a percentage, and the overall reliability is set by the number of stars - from one to five. Interestingly, out of 40 models that passed tests in 2014, only 5 made it into the ratings.
