Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 Dynamic

The Fiat Grande Punto has two 1-liter engines at your disposal: an eight-valve or sixteen-valve. Although Japanese manufacturers have set the multi-valve method as standard, it is not said that it is always good, desirable, or worth your money.

When comparing the two engines, the power difference is quite significant (57 kW / 78 hp vs 70 kW / 95 hp) as well as the difference between the maximum torques (115 Nm vs 128 Nm). However, we usually ignore the fact that an eight-valve engine develops its maximum torque at 3000 rpm, while a (sportier) sixteen-valve engine develops at 4500 rpm.

Now put yourself in the shoes of the average Punto buyer who doesn't set speed records on the road. Due to the torque it will follow the traffic well, the engine will deliberately “hold” between the two and four thousand numbers on the rev counter, maybe sometimes “blow” the exhaust system to five thousand, but definitely avoid turning into a red field, because then the engine is just uncomfortably loud. The engine is developed enough at lower revs to allow the rest of the family to sleep comfortably even on long trips, and above all, it is moderately thirsty, which is even more important today.

In the test, we had a three-door version, which itself is more sporty, and dynamic equipment, which is mainly chosen by more dynamic drivers. That is, we turned the sports steering wheel, which just fell into our hands, sat in the more pronounced side seats (although they look better than shells) and most of all laughed at our friends, who reminded us of gymnasts when we went to the back. seat.

There is enough equipment for spoiled people, but we were surprised by the low-quality work, since the crickets under the dashboard were very active, and most importantly, the tailgate was so poorly installed that the three of us in the editorial office (independently of each other)) checked whether they had closed we trunk completely. Apparently, the Italians had a really bad day at work.

Such a Punto can only conditionally satisfy a more sporty driver (appearance, equipment, transmission), who likes to listen to the sportier voice of the engine at 5000 rpm, since this is mainly written on the skin of a calm driver who does not want to give up three doors. a pinch of sports accessories, the engine jump up to 4000 rpm is more than enough.

evaluation

  • Handsome, spacious, with a good driving position, but at the same time quite nervous and moderately thirsty. Fiat is back on its feet, so you'll be satisfied too. If the Italian workers didn't have a bad day to assemble ...
