Fiat Punto Sporting
To be honest, when I first approached the new Punto Sporting, I had a little doubt about its sportiness. After all, a modified front bumper with a spoiler, accentuated side skirts and a spoiler at the rear (on the roof and integrated in the bumper) do not yet mean first-class handling.
Undoubtedly, you would also doubt the dynamic nature of Sporting if you had previously tested the equally motorized Punto 1.4 16V and after the first few kilometers of driving wondered where the Italians hid on paper the promised 70 kilowatts or 95 horsepower and 128 Newton meters of torque. ... But the initial doubts were dispelled after the first few hundred meters at Sporting, where he showed a completely different, much more dynamic character than the usual Punto 1.4 16V.
This is undoubtedly the fault of the perfectly sized six-speed manual, as the Fiat team pushed the extra gear exactly where it should be: among the top four. At the same time, Sporting got a lot of fragmentation in the first five gears, reaching top speed now in fifth and no more in fourth gear. This means that the athlete is saving engine rpm and therefore fuel “only” in sixth gear.
Due to the fragmentation of the first five gears in the Sporting, you will find a more suitable gear for all driving conditions than before. The result: the car runs much more dynamically and is by no means as weak as the Punto 1.4 16V. This is once again confirmed by the measured flex values in the individual gears: the Sporting accelerates from 50 to 90 kilometers per hour in fourth gear 2 seconds faster, and from 9 kilometers per hour to 80 in fifth gear takes 120 seconds less than Punto with a five-speed gearbox. Results that more than eloquently testify to the increased dynamism of Punto Sporting's character.
Even on the road, Sporting wants to behave like a real athlete. Thus, it has a stiffer suspension than the regular Punto, which means that all types of road bumps are transmitted to passengers much more efficiently. For the same reason, the car also bounces annoyingly over road waves and other bumps in the road at higher speeds.
During cornering, the toddler has a relatively high slip limit and warns of exaggeration when the rear slips (oversteer). However, adjusting the latter should not be a hassle for the driver, since he turns the steering wheel very straight (only 2 turns from one extreme position to the other) and a sufficiently responsive steering mechanism that always gives pleasure when cornering. ...
So, is Punto Sporting sporty? The answer is yes. But please don't expect Ferrari or Porsche athletes to jump out of 95 horses.
