Test drive Ford C-MAX and Grand C-MAX

Introduction

The new C-MAX impresses with a dual dashboard as the five-seat version has acquired the 7-seat Grand C-MAX. And don't think that this is exactly the same car that has just been squeezed in with two extra seats. If you look at the two models from the back, you will find that they differ significantly in design, to the point where you don't know which one to choose.

While Ford is releasing the 5-seat C-MAX as younger and sportier, we consider the Grand C-MAX to be more modern in the rear, mainly due to the sharp corners and sliding rear doors. Another big news in Ford's small and medium segment is the 1.600 cc EcoBoost turbo engines. See giving out 150 and 180 horsepower.

At the first contact, we had the opportunity to ride both the C-MAX and the Grand C-MAX.

Practical solutions Ford C-MAX and Grand C-MAX for every taste

Practical solutions for every taste. Aside from the looks and the rear doors, what sets the Grand apart from a simple C-MAX is its 140mm longer wheelbase (2.788mm vs. 2.648mm). This means that there are two extra seats that are easily accessible thanks to the “pass through” philosophy.

This is a special mechanism by which the middle seat of the 2nd row folds down and is quickly and easily stored under the seat on the right side, thereby creating a free passage between the two outer seats for easy access to the 3rd row (see How in one of the following videos).

The last two seats are ideal for small children, as adults up to 1,75m will only be comfortable for short distances, while they fold down and disappear into the floor The new C-MAX five-seater, on the other hand, uses the tried and tested comfort system the previous model with three separate 40/20/40 folding seats in the second row.

This system allows the center seat to be folded down and the outer seats moved diagonally backwards and inwards, increasing the comfort of the rear passengers. In both models, the second row of seats has ample room for both knees and head.

Only those who sit in the center will seek greater width. In general, there are few, but large and practical storage spaces, such as a deep armrest and smart hatches to the floor, under the feet of the 2nd row passengers. Finally, the 230 V socket on the back of the floor console is very practical.

Focus on driving the Ford C-MAX and Grand C-MAX

A very good view of the cockpit improves when you get behind the wheel. The dashboard is the same in both C-MAX and is made from quality materials. The top is covered in soft plastic, and the center console is beautifully decked in silver and glossy black.

All-round visibility is good, all controls are ergonomically placed, and the gear selector is high up on the center console, right where the driver's right hand "falls". Plus the relaxing blue backlighting of the dash and dashboard screen all point to an enjoyable driving experience.

But it only takes a few steps to realize that driving the C-MAX exceeds your initial expectations. 1.6 EcoBoost with 150 horsepower is a real discovery. Pulls from below, with no buttons or steps in its stroke, and moves the body very dynamically, delivering excellent performance (0-100 km/h in 9,4 and 9,9 seconds on the C-MAX and Grand C-MAX respectively).

At the same time, it reduces CO emissions2, only 154 g / km (159 for the Grand C-MAX). Equally positive are the reviews for the Durashift 6-speed manual gearbox, which features superior feel and functionality, as well as soft and precise shifting.

Suspension Ford C-MAX and Grand C-MAX

The suspension was one of his strong points. Ford has taken it further and the results are impressive. Both variants of the new MPV are excellent. Holding the suspension effectively controls body movements even in successive continuous turns, avoiding significant body tilt.

At the same time, it has significantly improved in comfort and ride quality, making the C-MAX a leader in its class in this area as well. The very good steering wheel contributes to the driving pleasure with its feel, weight and precision, while the standard ensures safety.

Torque vector control is available to improve stability and flexibility. Between the two models, the 5-seater C-MAX looks slightly straighter than the Grand C-MAX, mainly due to its shorter wheelbase. Both are very relaxing on the trip. Soundproofing keeps the cabin quiet, and aerodynamic noise starts to be heard after 150 km / h.

The only observation is the rolling noise of the rear wheels, which is slightly audible in the rear seats.

НThe new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX are on display at the Ford Show in late 2010. In 2011, the engines are equipped with a Stop & Start system and it is launched on the same platform. In 2013, plug-in hybrids finally followed, based on the new C-MAX, with further refinements.
