Ford Edge Sport 2.0 TDCi 154 kW Powershift AWD

There are really few drivers or customers in the world who know exactly what they are interested in, who drive only one car model all their lives. Most of us know what we like, but there is always something new that makes even the strongest rider feel confident. Ford entered one of the most successful car segments quite late. The fact or decision that in the future they will only produce successful models may be an excuse for them.

Also because of this, the sales range will be slightly reduced, as some models will no longer be available, but on the other hand, new ones also arrive in Europe. Ford is a newcomer to the luxury SUV class in Europe, which is certainly not true of the car market outside of the puddles. In the US market, Ford is recognizable in all vehicle classes. And Edge also came to Europe from the American. This name has been known there for many years, we only recognize it in Europe. Part of the credit, of course, can be attributed to Ford's global car philosophy of making more and more cars with the same performance in different global markets. Edge came to Europe with a big traveler.

Last year, it was the best-selling vehicle in its class in North America (where it is also produced), with over 124.000 15 customers selected it, up nearly 20 percent from last year. Also based on these numbers, Ford decided to launch the Edge in Europe. Late, of course, but better than never. However, Ford continues to claim superior comfort, advanced driver assistance technologies and best-in-class driving dynamics. With these words, many will be cut off by the ears, but the fact is that they also have a grain of truth. He appears quite confidently in the market and immediately wants to become the best, but, on the other hand, you will only succeed if you are optimistic enough. And at Ford, when it comes to newbies, they are without a doubt. The full name of the test model reveals the majority. The Sport Edge gets a different front bumper and the front grille has also been painted dark instead of chrome. There were no side members on the roof, but there was a double exhaust pipe with chrome trim and already XNUMX-inch very nice aluminum rims. The interior is also distinguished by the Sport trim level. The sports pedals and seats (heated and cooled) and the large panoramic window stand out, while the sports suspension is also invisible to the naked eye.

The Ford Edge is only available to buyers in Slovenia with a diesel engine with a choice of 180 or 210 horsepower. Obviously, the more powerful engine comes with sports test equipment. In practice, this works great, especially if we know the Edge is almost 4,8 meters long and weighs just under two tons. It accelerates to 100 kilometers per hour in just nine seconds and has a top speed of 211. Enough? Probably, for the majority, yes, but on the other hand, and especially in comparison with competitors, a little less. I mention the latter primarily in response to Ford's announcement that the Edge will offer best-in-class driving dynamics in its class. Of course, this is not true, but don't worry, for the average driver this is still more than enough. Most important is the fact that the Edge, despite its size and especially its height, doesn't lean too much in corners and, in the end, also provides a fairly dynamic ride. We can also thank the automatic dual-clutch transmission, which more than satisfies the job, and the permanent all-wheel drive. Maybe someone will miss a slightly more powerful steering wheel.

Not that there is something missing, but one like the Focus or Mondeo has no place in such a prestigious car. As mentioned, Edge is also equipped with a number of assistive security systems. Let's highlight the radar cruise control, which works well, but too often (at least on the highway) and interferes with vehicles in the right lane when cornering. As a result, the car slows down, although there is no one in the left lane ahead. On the other hand, it is true that it is better to brake too little a few times. The active noise cancellation system deserves special mention. In keeping with the same system as the noise canceling headphones, it eliminates unwanted sounds in the cabin and, of course, ensures that the noise in it is significantly less than it might otherwise be. Thus, the ride is quite quiet, since there is no (or rather limited) engine sound in the cabin, as well as some sounds from the outside. As a result, we need to be a little more careful about what is happening around us.

However, systems or cameras that prevent collisions with the vehicle in front, warn of vehicles behind it, and a front camera are also available to help the driver look around corners. If anything, the Edge impresses with its spaciousness. The one in the trunk is particularly impressive, and the folding backrests allow for 1.847 liters of luggage space, which Ford says is even the highest in the class. There's no reason to complain about rear-seat passengers, but things are different in the front, where many older drivers will want to push the seat back more. And probably closer to the ground, since it is located quite high in the car. But in any case, with all the pluses and minuses listed above, the Edge is an extremely interesting car. A little out of place, maybe, but the Edge already has a mesmerizing smell inside that is the same as most American cars.

Partly because of the last feeling that he is different. And such is the car. But it is different in a positive sense, because people on Slovenian roads turn to him and approve of him with gestures and words. This means they are on the right track at Ford. The price of the car will definitely help. That's not small, but the Edge is cheaper compared to similarly equipped competitors. This means that someone else will get more for less. First of all, big difference and highlighting from the middle gray.

Overall rating (350/420)

  • The Ford Edge is a welcome upgrade in the luxury crossover class.

  • Exterior (13/15)

Edge is the most impressive for its shape.

  • Interior (113/140)

The interior may be too reminiscent of already known models.

  • Engine, transmission (56

    / 40)

The drive has nothing to complain about, the chassis is completely solid, and the engine does not look in the teeth.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

Edge is not afraid of dynamic driving, but with the latter, he cannot hide his size.

  • Performance (26/35)

It's hard to say that the 210 horse is reaching its full potential, but the slow Edge certainly doesn't reach its full potential.

  • Security (40/45)

The Edge also features many of the systems we already know from other Fords, but unfortunately not all of them.

  • Economy (44/50)

Unlike the size of the car, the fuel consumption can be quite acceptable.
