Ford F-150: rear lights that show the weight of the load, a feature that makes it different

The Ford F-150 is not only America's best-selling pickup truck, but also a vehicle with plenty of pulling power, and now with a feature you might not have known about. The F-150 offers a weight mode that lets you know how much weight you're carrying in the bed of the truck through the rear lights.

The legendary Ford F-150 has many positive qualities, including the ability to tow a heavy load, reliable transmission options, advanced technologies and off-road qualities. Considering the F-150 is the best selling car, it gets a lot of media attention and it is surprising that very few people know about its unique tail light feature, but here we are going to tell you what it is and how it works.

F-150 smart taillights display body weight/payload

The F-150 has an onboard scale feature that allows you to see how much weight/payload is on the vehicle's platform, but how do you see the weight/payload? You can see this just by looking at the taillights.

The F-150's smart taillights have a function similar to a smartphone's battery indicator. LED indicators on the built-in vertical bar show the F-150's payload percentage. Here is how Ford describes it in his press release:

“As the truck is loaded, all four lights come on, indicating that it is fully charged. If the truck is overloaded, the parking lights flash. The maximum payload depending on the truck configuration is programmed into the system. In addition, the truck can be put into scale mode, which resets the current load and allows you to approximately weigh additional items loaded on the platform,” explains Ford.

Benefits of the F-150 Intelligent Taillights

The intelligent rear light function of the F-150 is revolutionary. When one looks at a tail light, few people think of it other than its traditional function of allowing people to see the edge of the car. Who would think of putting a secret function in it to determine the payload? Ford has done this, and the benefit of a smart taillight is that you can easily see how much weight you're carrying in the back of the truck. There is no need to use any other device or any other way to measure weight. It sits right in front of you while charging thanks to the Smart Taillight's four-bar indicator.

In addition to the weighbridge's intelligent rear light, F-150 customers can gauge how much payload is in the truck in two other ways. You can view this in a graphical representation on the touch screen inside the cabin, or view the weight in the box by launching the FordPass app on your smartphone.

What is the maximum payload of the F-150?

The F-150 can carry a lot of load. It has a class-leading maximum load capacity of 3,250 pounds. Plus, the F-150 is a towing beast, with a best-in-class maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds.

The F-150's utility gets an extra boost with its many trailer and truck bed features. With the Pro Power Onboard feature, you can use the F-150 as a mobile generator. Other features include smart hitch, smart trailer coupling, hitch light, trailer brake control, and tailgate work surface.
