Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi Titanium

On the base, called the Ford Focus, a powerful turbodiesel was installed in Cologne and everything was richly equipped. Sounds attractive; external rear-view mirrors with electric drive, all windows are automatic (of course, electric) travel in both directions, the driver's seat is electrically adjustable, the Sony audio system with CD changer (6) is very good, the air conditioning is automatic and divided longitudinally, the passenger compartment is on the panel instrumentation is cooling, the leather on the steering wheel and gear lever, some of the mechanics (power steering!) can work in a more sporty program, the windshield is electrically heated (which Ford has known for a long time, but still remains an exception in the automotive world), the headlights bend, and the interior really seems prestigious.

The engine performance is also convincing, especially considering the weight of the vehicle. But very large powers require some tax: just above idle, the engine catches its breath, which sometimes makes starting uncomfortable (starting uphill), and at certain moments the power rises sharply, almost abruptly. In the latter case, the well-perceived instant increase in excess acceleration takes on responsibility, which, on the one hand, is welcome as it allows lightning fast overtaking without downshifting, but can also be inconvenient until the driver gets used to it.

It is interesting, for example, that the engine in fourth gear easily spins up "only" up to 3800 rpm and just above 4000, although the red rectangle on the tachometer promises to spin up to 4500 rpm. This distinctively sporty character of the engine in the mid-rev range requires an experienced and energetic driver who knows how to drive a car. Traditionally, a very good drivetrain is perfect for this kind of driving.

Regardless of the engine, the Focus still convinces with its spacious feel, especially the five-door designed for families. It sits well in it (well, maybe the steering wheel can drop an inch lower), the visibility around it (including in the outside mirror) is very good, and the gauges are neat and transparent. However, as with the larger Mondeo, by mixing several design styles (circles, ovals, rectangles) on the dashboard (including the steering wheel) inside, we missed out on more useful storage space and the trip computer is also unacceptable for this. Ford.

The price and rather demanding engine are factors that narrow the circle of potential buyers. Just like the engine, they have to be demanding – and of course for driving enthusiasts. Only then will such a Focus be in good hands.

evaluation

  • The engine and equipment dictate the price, which is determined by the buyer. The engine is sometimes too aggressive to be considered a typical family car in this Focus.
