Ford Mondeo 1.8 TDCi (92 kW) ECOnetic (5 gates)

Don't be afraid, it's not a bad thing. After all, you can “give” less to the country, you just need to make the right decision - and it’s not at all necessary that the car is expensive because of this. Some car manufacturers have already come to the conclusion that ecology does not have to be expensive or difficult. It is also different: with minor fixes and improvements.

Ford car series with label ECOnetic is a great example of how to offer customers a more economical car (and at the same time a car with lower CO2 emissions), while ensuring that the purchase is not hindered by a higher price. Yes, you read that right - an economical Mondeo ECOnetic will cost you no more than a comparable "classic" model.

Mondeo ECOnetic has the same hardware as the best-selling Mondeo, that is, the Trend hardware package. Moreover, in all honesty, you don't even need it: the air conditioner is automatic, dual-zone, and the car has all the basic safety systems (seven airbags and ESP).

You just need to pay extra Visibility package (like the test Mondeo ECOnetic), which includes a rain sensor, a heated windshield and very pleasant heated front seats in this year's low winter temperatures.

In total, you will deduct a good 700 euros in addition to a good 400 euros for the parking system with front and rear sensors. Okay, if you don't like cars with steel wheels, you will have to pay $ 500 extra for alloy wheels, but this is more a matter of looks than usability.

Since this is an ECOnetic model, the alloy wheels will of course be the same size as the steel ones, so they can be fitted with 215/55 R 16 tires designed specifically for the Mondeo ECOnetic. They are distinguished by low rolling resistance, but nothing more can be said that this is true - in the middle of winter, of course, not summer tires were mentioned on the rims, but classic winter tires. That's why consumption was a deciliter higher, but the final number 7 L by 5 km, however, more than favorable.

In addition to aerodynamic accessories on the body (including the rear spoiler) and lower chassis (to keep the front surface of the car smaller), it also deserves a five-speed transmission with a longer differential gear ratio and a dedicated low gear. - the viscosity of the oil in it.

Pravdin gearbox biggest drawback this mondeo. The classic Mondeo Trend with the 1-liter diesel engine has a six-speed manual transmission, while the ECOnetic has a five-speed one. This means that the lower gear ratios are longer than desired, and thus the turbodiesel's characteristic excitation at low revs becomes even more pronounced.

Therefore, you need to use the gear lever more often (especially in the city) and the first gear is not only for starting off. ... It's a shame, because such a Mondeo with a six-speed gearbox would consume almost no fuel, but would be more comfortable for the driver.

The 1-liter TDCi is capable of developing respectively 8 kilowatts. 125 'horses', which is quite enough for everyday use. It's quiet and pretty smooth, except at around 1.300 rpm when it shakes awfully and uncomfortably.

But still: if you want an economical car of this size, this Mondeo is a good choice. You'll also save fuel on CO2 emissions (139 grams compared to 154 grams for the classic 1.8 TDCi Trend). And given that ECOnetic is in a lower DMV class (4 instead of 5 percent by the end of this year, or 5 instead of 6 percent later) than before when it was in the 11 percent tax class with this equipment, it could be that you also save money.

If, of course, you can wait for the new DMV to take effect.

  • This Mondeo is proof that hybrid technology and similar solutions do not always need to be hidden under the skin to reduce consumption (and emissions). It is enough to make the most of existing technologies.
