Ford Boasts OTA Updates (Online) But Delays Launch Until October

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is today a growing group of vehicles in which system components can be updated over the Internet (over the air, OTA). However, voices from America are just beginning to come in that there are OTA updates, yes, but mostly they will be. In October.

Online updates are an Achilles heel

Whether you like Tesla or not, you must admit that many aspects of the car's operation have been simulated. One example is Online Updates (OTA), which is the ability to fix bugs and introduce new features to vehicles thanks to newer software versions that are downloaded automatically when the vehicle is not in use. The rest of the world is rather clumsy trying to copy this feature.

Ford has been bragging for months that the latest Ford Mustang Mach-E (and the F-150 combustion engine) is giving buyers the ability to update software via OTA. Meanwhile, model buyers in America are now learning that they must visit a dealer to get new software... The salon will download patches to them after "connecting to a computer." The operation takes several hours, so the package must be large. Real OTA updates for the Mustang Mach-E are expected to be available in October..

From the point of view of the Polish customer, this is not a particularly important issue, because the delivery of the model is just beginning and the salons usually take care of downloading the latest fixes. However, this could be a sign of what troubleshooting will look like in the future. Ford is just learning to create software while outsourcing it. Therefore, do not expect that in 2022 or even 2023 everything will be ready, that every error will be diagnosed remotely and fixed with a software patch.

Virtually all traditional car manufacturers face similar challenges. Yes, they boast OTA support in their models, but more often than not, updates only concern the multimedia system and interface. The showrooms need more serious fixes – though thankfully this is slowly changing.
