Is the Ford Mustang Mach-E real mileage lower than expected? EPA primary documents

Forum Mach-E users found preliminary (but official) tests of the Ford Mustang Mach-E on the Internet, conducted in accordance with the procedure of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They show that the car will offer a worse range than the manufacturer claims - in the US, where values are lower than WLTP.

Just as Europe determines fuel consumption or range using the WLTP procedure, the United States uses the EPA. The editorial staff of www.elektrowoz.pl was initially more willing to provide EPA data, since they corresponded to the real range of electric vehicles. Today we either use the EPA, which takes into account our own tests and those of our readers, or we rely on the WLTP procedure, reduced by certain factors [WLTP score / 1,17]. The numbers we obtained are in good agreement with reality, i.e. with real ranges.

The EPA test is a multi-cycle dyno test including the City/UDDS, Highway/HWFET test. The results obtained are based on a formula that calculates the final range of an electric vehicle. The final number is affected by a factor, which is usually 0,7, but the manufacturer can change it within a small range. For example, Porsche lowered it, which affected the results of the Taycan.

Moving on to the essence: Ford Mustang Mach-E all wheel drive in the official test, he scored 249,8 miles / 402 kilometers real range according to EPA data (final result). Ford Mustang Mach-E rear earned 288,1 miles / 463,6 km real range (a source). In both cases, we are dealing with models with an enlarged battery (ER), which means batteries with a capacity of ~ 92 (98,8) kWh.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer promises the following values:

  • 270 miles / 435 km for EPA and 540 WLTP for Mustang Mach-E AWD,
  • 300 miles / 483 km EPA and 600 * WLTP units for the Mustang Mach-E RWD.

Preliminary tests show results that are approximately 9,2-9,6% lower than the manufacturer's declaration suggests.... The statement, we add, is also preliminary, because Ford goals as shown on the website, but there is no official data yet.

In conclusion, it is worth adding that electrical manufacturers are conservative in calculating EPA results for models that are just entering the market. Both Porsche and Polestar have been caught - the companies are probably afraid of manufacturer complaints or a painful EPA (Smart casus) review. Therefore, the final result of the car can be better.

The electric Ford Mustang Mach-E will debut on the Polish market in 2021. It will be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, but it is likely that with a similar battery capacity, its price will be lower by about 20-30 thousand zlotys. It is not clear if the same can be said about the models of both cars.

> Tesla Model Y Performance - the real range at 120 km / h is 430-440 km, at 150 km / h - 280-290 km. Revelation! [video]

*) the WLTP procedure uses kilometers, but since these are not real kilometers - see the explanation at the beginning of the article - the editors of www.elektrowoz.pl use the word "units" in order not to confuse the reader. .
