Ford Suspends Mustang Mach-E Orders Due to High Demand for Electric Crossover

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the brand's electric crossover that has gained massive market acceptance, so much so that Ford has exceeded its production capacity. Now the blue oval signature says that deliveries of the 2023 model will begin early next year.

If you're one of the many who wanted to get your hands on it this year, I've got bad news for you: the order books are closed.

Ford stopped taking orders for the new Mach-E Stang this week, signaling "unprecedented demand" for its electric crossover. This follows the March order closure for Mach-E Premium and Mach-E California Route 1, which completely prevents customers from buying electric vehicles until next year.

Supply chain constraints as an influencing factor

Aside from strong demand, Blue Oval hasn't provided further details, though likely not because it doesn't want to sell more cars and increase its profits, but because of production capacity and supply chain constraints.

"Due to unprecedented demand, retail order banks are closed for model year 22 (MY 2022) in the US," a Ford spokesperson said in a statement. “We will continue to sell a limited number of units left in dealer stock. We will provide order details for MY23 (model year 2023) as soon as they are available.”

Mustang Mach-E is selling like hot cakes

In 2021, Ford sold 27,140 15,602 units of the Mach-E in the US and 50,000 200,000 units in Europe. Its total production capacity is approximately 2023 units per year, although this number is increasing. CEO Jim Farley said Ford plans to triple its production capacity and hit unit production year-on-year.

Ford says it sold 6,734 Mach-E units in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2022. or if an automaker is unable to meet production demand due to a parts shortage that has plagued the entire industry for more than a year.

Ford to start deliveries of 2023 model before next year

Buyers hoping to get their hands on the 2022 Mach-E are limited to what's on dealer lots, according to a Ford spokesperson. Typically, an automaker starts selling next year's models by the end of the third quarter of the calendar year, and Ford does the same.

In fact, according to Ford, deliveries of the 2023 Mach-E won't start until early next year, meaning enthusiastic Mach-E buyers will have plenty of time to wait if they don't want to pay a dealer surcharge.
