Ford closes bookings for 150 Ford F-2022 Lightning

The Ford F-150 Lightning was a resounding success in terms of bookings, but Ford could have some problems. The blue oval firm was unable to secure production, resulting in some customers being able to receive their Lightnings in 2023.

Demand for 2022 electric vehicles has been so extreme that the automaker has injected an additional $250 million into its plant to ramp up production. However, it seems that Ford is not yet ready for more; otherwise, he could have left the Lightning's reservation open instead of closing it as he is now.

"As we prepare to make history together, we have closed bookings to begin taking bookings," reads an excerpt from . An email from a Ford dealer to user F150Gen14 reveals that Blue Oval was already planning to close its order book for that date and that Ford will start increasing its order bank in January. In the spring of 2022, the truck will finally go into production.

Customers with reservations can wait until 2023 to get their electric pickup.

Ford apparently has more reserves than production capacity for the 2022 model year, as the dealer email states that "not all reservation holders will receive an invitation to place an order for MY22." This becomes even more apparent when you consider that Ford CEO Jim Farley said the total number of vehicles reserved is approaching 200,000 units.

If the Lightning is in the same boat as its electrified sibling, the hybrid Maverick, early reservation holders may have to wait for the 2023 models. However, with a production capacity of 80,000 trucks per year in its second year, Ford will position itself as the undisputed leader in electric truck volume.

Ford leads the electric pickup market

After all, comparable vehicle production is reportedly not going to expand until Rivian is on track to fulfill its Amazon van contract, and the GMC Hummer EV, as the most expensive of the three, will never sell in serious volumes.

It appears to be an advantage that Ford will easily retain until at least the Chevrolet Silverado EV, if not one that will last until the Lightning has its own platform.
