Functions, device and models of GPS beacons for a car

A car beacon or GPS tracker acts as an anti-theft device. This small device helps to track and locate the vehicle. GPS beacons are often the last and only hope for the owners of stolen vehicles.

The device and purpose of GPS beacons

The abbreviation GPS stands for Global Positioning System. In the Russian segment, the analogue is the GLONASS system (short for "Global Navigation Satellite System"). In the American GPS system, 32 satellites are in orbit, in GLONASS - 24. The accuracy of determining the coordinates is approximately the same, but the Russian system is younger. American satellites have been in orbit since the early 70s. It is best if the beacon integrates the two satellite search systems.

Tracking devices are also called "bookmarks" because they are covertly installed in the vehicle. This is facilitated by the small size of the device. Usually no bigger than a matchbox. The GPS beacon consists of a receiver, a transmitter and a battery (battery). There is no need to pay to use the GPS system, and it is also independent of the Internet. But some devices may use a SIM card.

Do not confuse a lighthouse with a navigator. The navigator leads the way and the beacon determines the position. Its main function is to receive a signal from a satellite, determine its coordinates and send them to the owner. Such devices are used in a variety of areas where you need to know the location of an object. In our case, such an object is a car.

Types of GPS beacons

GPS beacons can be roughly divided into two categories:

  • self-powered;
  • combined.

Autonomous beacons

Autonomous beacons are powered by a built-in battery. They are slightly larger as the battery takes up space.

Manufacturers promise autonomous operation of the device for up to 3 years. The duration will depend on the settings of the device. More precisely, on the frequency with which the location signal will be given. For optimal performance, it is recommended no more than 1-2 times a day. This is quite enough.

Autonomous beacons have their own operating characteristics. Long battery life is guaranteed under comfortable weather conditions. If the air temperature drops to -10 ° C, then the charge will be consumed faster.

Powered beacons

The connection of such devices is organized in two ways: from the vehicle's on-board network and from the battery. As a rule, the main source is the electrical circuit, and the battery is only auxiliary. This does not require a continuous supply of voltage. A short turn-on is enough for the device to charge and continue to work.

Such devices have a longer service life, because no need to change the battery. Combined beacons can operate on voltages in the range of 7-45 V thanks to the built-in voltage converter. If there is no external power supply, the device will give a signal for about 40 more days. This is enough to detect a stolen car.

Installation and Setup

Before installing the GPS tracker, it must be registered. The SIM card of the mobile operator is often installed. The user receives an individual login and password, which it is better to immediately change to convenient and memorable ones. You can enter the system on a special website or in an application on a smartphone. It all depends on the model and manufacturer.

The combined power beacon is connected to the vehicle's standard wiring. Additionally, two powerful lithium batteries are used.

Standalone beacons can be hidden anywhere. They work in sleep mode, so the built-in battery lasts for a long time. It remains only to configure the frequency of the sent signal once every 24 or 72 hours.

For the beacon antenna to work properly and receive a reliable signal, do not install the device close to reflective metal surfaces. Also, avoid moving or heating parts of the car.

Where is the best place to hide the lighthouse

If the beacon for the car is connected to the on-board network, then it is most convenient to hide it under the central panel in the area of the cigarette lighter or glove box. There are tons of other hiding places for an autonomous beacon. Here is some of them:

  • Under the interior trim. The main thing is that the antenna does not rest against the metal and is directed towards the salon. The reflective metal surface should be at least 60 centimeters.
  • In the door body. It is not difficult to dismantle the door panels and place the device there.
  • In the rear window shelf.
  • Inside the seats. We'll have to remove the upholstery of the chair. If the seat is heated, it is not necessary to install the appliance close to heating elements.
  • In the trunk of a car. There are many nooks and crannies where you can safely hide a beacon for your car.
  • In the wheel arch opening. The device should be securely fixed, as contact with dirt and water is inevitable. The device must be waterproof and sturdy.
  • Under the wing. To do this, you will need to remove the wing, but this is a very secure place.
  • Inside the headlights.
  • In the engine compartment.
  • In the rearview mirror.

These are just a few options, but there are many others. The main thing is that the device works correctly and receives a stable signal. You also need to remember that someday there will be a need to replace the batteries in the beacon and you will have to dismantle the skin, bumper or fender again in order to get the device.

How to spot a beacon in a car

The tracker is difficult to locate if it is carefully hidden. You will have to carefully examine the interior, body and bottom of the car. Car thieves often use so-called "jammers" that block the beacon signal. In this case, the autonomy of the tracking device plays an important role. Someday the "jammer" will be turned off and the beacon will signal its position.

Major manufacturers of GPS beacons

There are tracking devices on the market from different manufacturers with different prices - from cheap Chinese ones to reliable European and Russian ones.

Among the most famous brands are the following:

  1. Autophone... It is a large Russian manufacturer of tracking devices. Provides autonomy up to 3 years and high accuracy in determining coordinates from GPS, GLONASS systems and the LBS mobile channel. There is a smartphone app.
  1. UltraStar... Also a Russian manufacturer. In terms of functionality, accuracy and size it is somewhat inferior to Avtophone, but it has a wide range of devices with different functionality.
  1. iRZ Online... The tracking device of this company is called "FindMe". The battery life is 1-1,5 years. Only the first year of operation is free.
  1. Vega-Absolute... Russian manufacturer. The lineup is represented by four models of beacons, each of which differs in functionality. The maximum battery life is 2 years. Limited settings and functions, search only.
  1. X-Tipper... The ability to use 2 SIM cards, high sensitivity. Autonomy - up to 3 years.

There are other manufacturers, including European and Chinese, but they do not always work at low temperatures and with different search engines. Russian-made trackers are capable of operating at -30 ° C and below.

GPS / GLONASS beacons are an auxiliary vehicle protection system against theft. There are many manufacturers and models of these devices that offer different functions, from advanced to simple positioning. You need to choose as needed. Such a device can really help find a car when theft or in any other situation.
