Gas in winter – what should you remember?

The start of the winter season is a great time to check the entire installation and all cables. The inspection includes checking the heating boiler itself and all pipes, which should be replaced at certain intervals, even if they have not yet shown signs of wear or leaks.

The next step is to connect the cylinders containing. In winter, using a propane-butane mixture does not make much sense. At temperatures below -0,5 Celsius, butane stops evaporating and turns into a liquid state. Therefore, we will not use it to heat the interior of the car or heat water. But pure propane will burn completely, and thus we will use the entire 11-kilogram cylinder.

Where can I find pure propane tanks? There is no clear answer to this question. It is worth paying attention to gas bottling plants - they are in every major city. Before your trip, we recommend taking the phone and calling the area. This will save us time and nerves.

Another solution. You can find some online that run on 12V. Just raise the temperature slightly so it stays just above one degree. In this combination we can use a mixture of propane and butane.

The question, contrary to appearances, is very complex. Consumption depends on the size of the camper or trailer, outside temperature, insulation and the set temperature inside. Approximately: one cylinder of pure propane in a well-insulated camper up to 7 meters long will “work” for about 3-4 days. It's always worth having a spare - there's nothing worse not only for our comfort, but also for the water supply system on board, than lack of heating.

It is worth adding a small addition to the gas installation in the form. This type of solution is available on the market, among others: Truma and GOK brands. What will we get? We can connect two gas cylinders at the same time. When one of them runs out of gas, the system will automatically switch consumption to the other. Therefore, the heating will not turn off and we will not have to replace the cylinder around 3 am when it is snowing or raining. This kind of anger towards inanimate things is when gas most often runs out.

The GOK gearbox is called Caramatic DriveTwo and, depending on the store, costs about 800 zlotys. DuoControl, in turn, is a Truma product –

for this you will have to pay about 900 zlotys. Is it worth it? Definitely yes!

For our safety on board the camper or trailer. A special device that operates on 12 V and detects both too high concentrations of propane and butane, as well as narcotic gases, costs about 400 zlotys.

Finally, it's worth mentioning electricity. in this they have an advantage over diesel engines. The popular Truma in older versions only needs energy to operate the fans that distribute warm air throughout the trailer. New solutions include additional digital panels, but don't be alarmed. According to the manufacturer, the power consumption of Truma Combi version 4 (gas) is 1,2A when heating the interior and heating water.

A gas installation prepared in this way will ensure comfortable rest even at subzero temperatures. We don't have to go straight to the mountains to go snow skiing with an old trailer, but... These fields have dishwashers and bathrooms with sinks, toilets and showers. Our trailer or camper doesn't even have to have water in the tanks and pipes. So you can go caravanning all year round!
