The owner of Volvo shows that he is serious about electrification.

Geely, the powerful Chinese conglomerate that currently owns Volvo and Lotus, has launched a brand new electric marque called Geometry.

The launch of the brand in Singapore was accompanied by the introduction of the first Geometry model, the Geometry A sedan.

While Geely says Geometry is initially targeting the Chinese market, it plans to expand overseas orders and expand its product range to 10 EV models by 2025, including SUVs and minivans.

Geely says it chose the name Geometry and a simple naming system to "express endless possibilities."

The Geometry A is a small-to-midsize sedan that will compete against models such as the Hyundai Ioniq and Tesla Model 3. It will be available in two battery levels: Standard Range with a 51.0 kWh battery and Long Range. with a battery of 61.9 kWh, which allows you to drive 410 km and 500 km, respectively.

Each battery level is available in three specifications: A², A³ and Aⁿ.

Unlike many Chinese cars, the Geometry A's styling appears to be fairly independent and devoid of overt imitation, though if you ask us, there's a slight Audi influence in these taillights.

Inside, there's a neat raised center console, a Tesla Model 3-style two-spoke steering wheel, and a giant multimedia screen on the dash.

Geely claims the Geometry A will consume 13.5kWh/100km - or less than the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Kona EV - and will have a maximum power output of 120kW/250Nm.

Geometry A will have a significant array of active safety features that Geely says will give Level 2 autonomy. Included are Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Active Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), lane change assistance and one-button automatic parking. It will even have a built-in HD recorder to save buyers the cost of a DVR.

While the Geometry A is far from confirmed for the Australian market, Geely says it has received 18,000 orders from countries outside of China where electric vehicles are popular, such as Norway and France.

We have yet to get any current models of Geely or another design brand from the Chinese giant, Lynk & Co, on Australian shores.

Geometry A may be impressively detailed, but it won't be impressively cheap.

The list price of an electric car in China will range from the equivalent of $43,827 to $52,176 in Australian dollars at current exchange rates. In China, the final cost is significantly less due to government subsidies, but expect it to cost even more if it ever arrives here.
