The hydraulic booster is a unit consisting of a distributor and a power cylinder assembly. The booster hydraulic system includes a vane pump mounted on a car engine, an oil tank, pipelines and hoses.

The distributor consists of a body 21 (Fig. 88), a spool 49, a swivel body 7 with a glass 60, ball pins 13 and 12, and a spool stroke limiter 48.

The distributor regulates the flow of fluid from the pump to the power cylinder. When the pump is running, the liquid constantly circulates in a vicious circle: pump - distributor - tank - pump.

The hydraulic booster power cylinder is connected to the body of the distributor hinges by a threaded connection. The cylinder has a piston 4 with a rod 2, at the end of which there is a hinged head for attaching to the frame. Outside, the stem is protected from contamination by a corrugated rubber boot.

Having in its design a low-power petal pump and a small diameter booster cylinder, it forced the driver to exert considerable effort when driving.

Also in winter, during severe frosts, the oil in the hydraulic drive cooled, and the flywheel had to be constantly pumped up in a small range. In this regard, many drivers began to change direction to the mechanisms of more modern car brands.

I also had to remake the steering gear from the MAZ-500 and change it to a super one. However, the steering wheel from Super MAZ can not be found everywhere, and the price sometimes bites.

Therefore, it is better to consider other options and choose a steering wheel from the most common car models. KamAZ trucks, for example, were produced much more than MAZ cars, so spare parts for them are available almost everywhere.

Therefore, the owners of the MAZ-500 often put on their car a steering mechanism from a KamAZ car. By doing such an update, they know that such a replacement is prohibited by the rules.

However, drivers still prefer to retrofit their cars and there are 2 reasons for this: firstly, the general education level of traffic police officers is extremely low and most of them will not be able to distinguish their native MAZ-KamAZovsky 500th; secondly, many drivers believe that it is better for them to get a fine once a year than to constantly suffer from a heavy steering.

My opinion is that it is better to put the address with Super MAZ. However, I may be wrong, because it also has its drawbacks: a spaced booster cylinder and a bunch of hoses.

The KamAZ steering mechanism has a combined steering mechanism with a cylinder, a small mass and various parts. It is also worth noting that it is advisable to install the power steering on the MAZ-500 from the all-wheel drive KamAZ-4310, and not from the KamAZ-5320, for example.

The power steering of a four-wheel drive truck has a larger diameter power steering cylinder in its design and is easier to operate. Outwardly, the KAMAZ GURs are similar, but on a more powerful hydraulic booster, the bipod is attached to the steering worm with one large nut.

To install the KamAZ power steering, you must first remove the MAZ-500 native steering from the frame along with the power steering bracket and hydraulic cylinder, and disconnect the longitudinal steering rod from the kingpin lever.

Also, the KamAZ power steering is tested on the frame together with the bracket, as close as possible to the front, and its place on the frame is marked. The hydraulic booster bracket is removed and tested in the marked place, after which holes are drilled in the frame and the bracket is fully fixed. Then the steering gear is attached to the bracket. Longitudinal rod is made of transverse rod MAZ-500.

The next step is to put the steering wheel in the middle position and the wheels are placed straight. The distance between the steering arm and the knuckle pivot arm is then measured. The rod is cut with a grinder, and then a thread is cut on a lathe for the KamAZ tip.

After the longitudinal steering rod is assembled, it is installed in place and the steering shaft is connected to the steering.

Metal pipeline pipes are taken from KamAZ and adapters are sewn to them to connect the expansion oil tank and power steering pump to the drain line.

Three types of pumps are used with power steering: vane, gear NSh-10 and NSh-32. It should be noted that the mounting of the three pumps is different. The lightest and fastest steering wheel with the NSh-32 pump, the heaviest with the NSh-10 pump, the most careful with the vane pump. This is due to the increased load on the front axle of the MAZ-500.

Looking at the table below, we can conclude that it is desirable to install a reinforced power steering on the KamAZ-4310.

When replacing parts of the MAZ power steering booster, at the end of the assembly, the spool must be placed in the neutral position. At the same time, the calculated torque for turning the screw assembly of the steering mechanism with the distributor in the middle position of the rack nut is within strictly specified limits from 2,8 to 4,2 Nm (from 0,28 to 0,42 kgcm). Also, turning the screw from the middle position both in one direction and in the other direction, the moment should decrease.
