Most likely, the idea of creating a global satellite telephony system came from Karen Bertinger, the wife of one of Motorola's bosses. She was very disappointed and unhappy that during her stay on the beach in the Bahamas she could not talk to her husband. Iridium is the only fully global satellite telephony network with literally worldwide service. It was launched in 1998. Specialists of the American corporation Motorola started developing Iridium in 1987. The attracted telecommunications companies and global industrial concerns established in 1993 the international consortium Iridium LLC, based in New York.
