Engine timing

A broken belt causes very serious engine damage as a result of the collision of the pistons with the valves, which can lead to bending of the valve stems, damage to the pistons and valve guides.

A broken timing belt causes a very serious engine failure due to the impact of the pistons on the valves, which can lead to bending of the valve stems, damage to the pistons and valve guides.

To transmit torque from the crankshaft to the camshaft, toothed, chain or belt drives using a toothed belt are used. The latter solution does not require lubrication, is wear resistant and does not overload the bearings. Most often used in modern cars. During operation, this belt is subjected to millions of alternating stresses, temperature changes and wear as a result of friction against mating elements.

Thanks to advances in manufacturing technology and the materials used, the service life of belts, guaranteed by the belt and vehicle manufacturer, has been increased to an average of 70 km, and in some cases up to 000 km.

A broken belt causes very serious engine damage due to collision of pistons with valves, which can lead to twisted valve stems, damage to pistons, valve guides, etc. It is clear that repairing an engine after such a failure is very expensive. .

Such breakdowns occur either as a result of non-compliance with the timing for replacing the timing belt specified in the operating instructions, or, which is rare, a factory defect of the belt.

Looking into the engine compartment of modern cars is of little help, as often not even the belt cover is visible. Listening to the operation of the engine, one can only pay attention to the absence of strong and interfering noises in the belt area - “torn” belt elements can cause noise, shaking against engine elements or covers. In this case, you can take it as a signal and prevent a major failure.

When buying a used car, the documents of which do not indicate the date of the last replacement of the belt, it is better to pay extra and replace the belt.
