Driving a car and listening to music on headphones can prevent the driver from hearing the sudden braking noise of another car or an oncoming train. As with loud music playing in a car, using headphones while driving is a violation of the rules of safe driving and can lead to accidents.

Drivers listening to music through headphones may not hear the sirens of emergency vehicles, oncoming vehicles or other sounds that allow them to analyze the traffic situation, explains Zbigniew Veseli, director of the Renault driving school. Using headphones while driving also makes it impossible to listen to any disturbing noises from the vehicle itself that could be indicative of breakdowns. It is also illegal in some countries. However, in Poland the road code does not regulate this issue.
Playing music loudly through the speakers while driving has the same effect as listening to music with headphones. In addition, it is mentioned among the factors that cause loss of concentration.
