Mainsail carbine

Soldiers of the Territorial Defense Forces are armed with Grot C 16 FB-M1 basic carbines.

Last year, the Polish Army received the first copies of the standard Grot carbines, which are part of the Modular Boni Strzelecka System, caliber 5,56 mm (MSBS-5,56). This is the first weapon of this class in Poland, developed from scratch by Polish scientists and engineers and put into serial production by the national defense industry. Therefore, the history of its development is certainly worth explaining.

The idea of carrying out work on the creation of a modern Polish automatic rifle, which will replace the Soviet 7,62-mm automatic rifle of the Home Army in the structures of the Polish Army, was born in the Office of Special Facilities (ZKS) Institute of Armament Technology (ITW) at the Faculty of Mechatronics and Aviation (VML) of the Military Technological University (MUT). Their initiator was the then head of the ZKS ITU VML VAT Lieutenant Colonel Doctor of Technical Sciences. Ryszard Wozniak, who is also the author of the name MSBS (short for Modular Gun System).

The Genesis of the Standard Carbine with Grot Stock Location

Modern Polish carbine for the Polish soldier of the future - 2003-2006

The creation of MSBS was preceded by extensive theoretical and experimental research on weapons used in Poland and around the world, which made it possible to turn the idea into a research project no. Richard Wozniak. This project, funded by the Ministry of Science and Information Technology in 00-029, was implemented by the Military University of Technology in cooperation with Fabryka Broni “Lucznik” -Radom Sp. z oo (FB Radom).

On the basis of a study completed in 2006, it was found that: […] carbines based on the “Kalashnikov system” in service with the Polish Armed Forces have reached a borderline modernization state, they are undeveloped designs and should be replaced in the near future with new advanced systems. As a result, further actions aimed at improving the design and performance of the “Kalashnikov system” weapons seem to be ineffective, especially in the context of adapting weapons to the […]

This conclusion was a breakthrough in the implementation of the idea of creating a new weapon for the "Polish soldier of the future."

Development of a project for a technology demonstrator for the MSBS-5,56K carbine - 2007–2011.

The origins of the standard (basic) carbine of 5,56 mm caliber in the Grot stock system, which is part of the Modular Small Arms System of 5,56 mm caliber (MSBS-5,56), can be found in the development project No. O P2007, started at the end of 00 0010 04, funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, "Development, construction and technological testing of standard 5,56 mm caliber (basic) modular small arms carbines for the Polish Armed Forces". It was implemented in 2007–2011 by the Military Technical University in close cooperation with FB Radom. The project was led by a colonel in the position of prof. wat doctor hub. English Ryszard Wozniak, and the leading designers were: from the side of the Academy, Colonel Dr. Eng. Miroslav Zahor, and from FB Radom initially MSc. Krzysztof Kosel, and later Eng. Norbert Piejota. One of the results of this project was the development of a demonstrator of the main rifle technology in the MSBS-5,56K butt system (K - butt), which became the basis for building the MSBS-5,56 family of rifles, both in the MSBS-5,56 applied and stockless system, 5,56B (B - false). On the basis of three main modules: the breech, the bolt frame with the bolt and the return device (common for all modifications of the MSBS-XNUMX carbines), it is possible to configure the weapon in the applied and non-applied structural system, obtaining:

  • main carabiner,
  • sub carbine,
  • grenade launcher,
  • sniper rifle,
  • shop machine gun,
  • representative carabiner.

The modularity of the MSBS-5,56 design is based on the ability to adapt carbines - using weapon module modules - to the individual needs of a soldier. The main module is the breech chamber, to which the rest are attached: the trigger chamber module (determining the design system - butt or without a butt), barrel modules of various lengths, a butt or shoe legs module, a sliding bolt module with a lock, a return device module, a module beds and others. This type of solution allows the weapon to be quickly configured so that it can be adapted to the needs of the user and to the conditions of the battlefield. Due to the use of modules of easily replaceable barrels of different designs and lengths, the weapon can be used as an auxiliary carbine (option with the shortest barrel), a basic carbine (standard soldier’s weapon), a machine gun (option with a barrel with a high heat capacity) or a paramount carbine (the option with trunk). Barrel replacement can be done in the field with a hex wrench by the direct user.

The main assumptions of the designed standard carbine MSBS-5,56K concerned the use in its design:

  • the idea of modularity,
  • full adaptation of weapons for use by right-handers and left-handers,
  • variable direction of ejection of shells to the right or left side,
  • easily replaceable barrels on the battlefield,
  • adjustable gas system,
  • locking by turning the lock,
  • Picatinny rails according to STANAG 4694 in the upper part of the lock chamber,
  • powered by AR15 magazines (M4/M16).
