The GWM lineup will be replenished with Haval GT in the second quarter.

GWM Haval has added another new SUV model to its growing lineup, and this time it's aimed at European premium competitors.

The Haval H6 GT, called the H6S in some markets, is a coupe-style modification of the Chinese automaker's popular midsize SUV, the H6.

Haval is the first mainstream brand to launch a fast-moving midsize SUV, but there are plenty of examples in the premium midsize SUV segment.

The common design theme can already be seen on models such as the Audi Q5 Sportback, BMW X4, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. The original coupe-style SUV was the big brother of the BMW X4, the X6 back in 2007.

Like these models, the Haval H6 GT features a sloping rear roofline and other sporty styling cues such as a trunk lid and roof spoiler, dual exhaust, a more aggressive front end with a larger grille and an air intake at the bottom of the hood. It also features Brembo brakes and Michelin tires.

Inside, it gets trim and sport seats that are unique to the GT, but it also has tech features found in the regular H6, like a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch multimedia display.

The H6 GT is 74mm longer, 54mm wider and 5mm taller than the standard H6 SUV, but has a wheelbase of 2738mm.

The H6 is powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine under the hood of the H6 SUV, which develops 150kW and 320Nm and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

In China, it's offered with a 179kW/530Nm hybrid powertrain, but GWM Australia hasn't confirmed if it will eventually be available here.

Standard safety gear includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, forward collision warning, lane keeping assist and lane departure warning.

The H6 GT will hit Australian GWM dealerships in the second quarter of this year, with pricing and full specs to be released closer to launch.

It's not yet clear if the GT will only be offered in one model class or if it will mimic the H6 SUV classes, which include Premium Base Front Drive (FWD), Lux FWD and Ultra FWD, and all-wheel drive.

The current H6 arrived in Australia in May 2021, priced between $31,990 and $39,990.

Despite the lack of cool coupe-style SUVs from mainstream brands, the H6 GT's likely competitors are the MG HS, Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4. and Ford Escape.
