The future of SsangYong may have just been secured by a new owner, but it is moving forward with the development of a new all-electric SUV that the Toyota Prado seems to have in sight.

The model in question is currently known as the J100. Of course, by the time it launches later this year, it may have a different name. In any case, SsangYong announced its upcoming appearance last June.

At the time, the South Korean brand described the J100 as a "mid-size" model that would sit between the mid-size Korando (4450mm long) and the big Rexton (4850mm) in the SUV lineup, but to what extent? is still unknown.

However, it is known that the J100 sketches published by SsangYong in 2020 are not a fantasy. Instead, they are very faithful to the close-to-production prototype. Fear TV a semi-masked spy image has just been released.

This means the J100 needs to get a rugged look that won't seem out of place in the face of the all-conquering Prado. The distinguishing design feature of the former is the distinctive tailgate with a half-tire cover and a proper handle.

Other than the three-quarter rear view shown above, no other images of the candid J100 prototype have been released, but fully camouflaged examples that have been spotted on the roads of South Korea indicate that the front should be familiar too.

As reported, the J100 is almost confirmed to get a body-on-frame chassis, as one of SsangYong's other upcoming all-electric models is likely tied to the best-selling Toyota HiLux.

No all-electric model has been confirmed for Australia at this stage, but a SsangYong Australia spokesperson previously said Cars Guide they are "on our radar" so stay tuned.
