Honda Accord 2.2 i-CDTI Executive

The days when Honda men in Europe tore their hair out because they didn't have diesel cars in their range are long gone. Moreover, the diesels they received in response to their inquiries were (mostly) top notch.

For example, the Accord received a 2-liter diesel engine, which most journalists hailed as the pinnacle of diesel technology at the time. But since time doesn't stop, the Accord's status (which was still fresh at the time) also slowly changed with this engine. Let's be more precise: the Accord 2 i-CDTI remained the Accord 2.2 i-CDTI, but the competition was growing. The 2.2 (otherwise extremely smooth and high-revving) horsepower the engine is capable of is long gone. Competition of less volume can produce 140 more horses.

The Accord has been recently redesigned a bit - it's so light it's almost unnoticeable. Little things on the nose (especially look at the mask or the chrome strip in it), slightly different light, new exterior mirrors, little things inside, in short, nothing special. And, frankly, the Accord's shape just didn't fit in a drawer labeled "Obsolete and in Need of Repair."

So what's the biggest change? You can see this if you look at the shift lever: now there are six more in front of the five. Remember our mid-range sedan comparison test? At the time, the Accord came in second and the only major complaint was the gearbox, or lack of gears - and the associated noise and excessive consumption.

Equipped with a new six-speed transmission, the Accord will (very likely) not be the winner in this comparison test, but it will certainly be much less lagging behind the Passat. Cruising speed is now lower, so there is less noise and less fuel consumption. Since there are more gears, the engine does not have to turn so high that they fall into the correct operating range when shifting, so (again) less noise and consumption. Etc.

I’m just wondering how such a small (relatively speaking, of course) change can change the character of the car.

Another? Secondly, as it was: too thin and too large steering wheel, comfortable seats with a little too short longitudinal travel, enough rear room and a good enough feeling that the price (at least from this side) is justified.

The chassis still contributes to precise steering, dampens decisive and hard impacts from under the wheels a little too little, but, on the other hand, allows the driver to have enough fun in corners. In short: The Accord is still the Accord this time, only now it's even better. Best in class? Almost - and still is.

evaluation

  • The Accord got an infusion with this gearbox, which will have to be kept until the engine is refreshed. The rest of the changes are very small and almost imperceptible.
