Honda Civic 1.4IS (4V)

The first Civic was a small, humble hatchback, and then the family of models became more diverse from generation to generation. In 1995, the tenth millionth fifth-generation Civic rolled off cassettes, and in 1996 the first Civic made at the European plant in Swindon entered the market. Today they are produced in Japan (three- and four-door versions), the USA (two-door coupes) and the UK (five-door versions and Aerodeck).

Civics look different, but all models have the same chassis design. The basic specs are the same, although the two- and four-door models have a 60mm shorter wheelbase. Thus, the test four-door Civic hails from Japan.

The designers were tasked with making the interior larger while maintaining a compact design. The new Civic is slightly shorter, wider and taller than its predecessor, but has more room inside. This points to a completely new design of this car, as they say, from the inside. It is characterized by a flat bottom without a central projection. New front and rear suspensions and a more compact engine bay result in increased passenger and luggage space.

The shape of the new Honda Civic is classic sedan. Four doors and a separate trunk, which means good access to all seats from all sides. There's no room for large pieces of luggage in a reasonably large trunk because they don't go through the door, although they've widened the opening a bit. And also the processing of the door is incorrect, without cladding. Looks like the car was unfinished.

And the classic Japanese minus: the trunk lid can only be opened with a key or a lever from the inside. The same lever on the left side of the front seat also opens the fuel filler door. The central locking only works on the driver's door, and only one door is locked or unlocked on the front passenger door. There is no air conditioner, but there is a built-in preparation for it. To pay for it almost 300 thousand more. It is also strange for a Japanese car that there is no clock on it. But it's better without it than to be hard to see, which we often see.

On the one hand, the package bundle is rich, but on the other, it seems that something is missing. ABS with EBD is standard, there are two airbags, electrification of all four windows, power steering. The rear seats have isofix attachment points. It is central locking, but it only works on the driver's door. For example, there is no air conditioner so popular today. The car is expensive enough to have it as standard.

On the other hand, the four-door Civic is a pretty car. Pleasantly refreshing dashboard with comfortable, well-visible, logical and accessible buttons and switches. The radio is only a little disturbing, it's cheap. The instruments are clear and cutely simple, and driving the Honda Civic is a breeze.

The engine loves to start, and an even better feature is the pleasure of spinning and powering. Despite the relatively small volume, it is very peppy and fast. It's not too greedy either, but it does get too loud at high revs. The engine in the test Civic is the smaller of the two offered. It is a modern lightweight cast iron unit (block and head) and a single camshaft is controlled by four valves above each cylinder. Compared to its predecessor, it has the same power and slightly increased torque, which it achieved at a lower RPM than before.

The gearbox is probably one of the weakest points of the new Civic. At the very least, the test was blatantly imprecise, and shifting to reverse was already a real lottery. In fact, for Honda, this is somehow strange. Gear ratios are recalculated very quickly, so that even in fifth gear, the engine cranks all the way, and the speedometer is close to 190. If it were not for the loud noise and inaccurate transmission, the new Civic would have deserved a much higher rating. Especially when you consider the well-controlled chassis, reliable position and reliable brakes.

The four-door Honda Civic is just one version on offer, so you don't even have to look at it if you don't like it. Some are simply in love with such a form and can even afford it. And at Honda, they can offer that. This is also somewhat true.

evaluation

  • As stated, the four-door Civic is native to Japan. This is probably the main reason for the high price. And the price, besides the gearbox, is definitely one of the reasons against buying. Otherwise, it could be a very suitable and beautiful car.
