Honda Civic 1.8 i-VTEC Sport

The test Honda Civic was also black. Inside. Both red and black are similar to the stone in the stereotype of Japanese cars, which are supposed to be silver on the outside and light gray on the inside. This Civic is clearly the exact opposite.

More about flowers! Civics of this generation are of course also offered in other colors, including silver, but it seems that blood red is the only one that suits her. Or (maybe) black. This is the only way to express every little thing that the designer came up with. And that's the only way it really becomes the car everyone turns to, not just Honda fans.

Back in Japan, they made a bold decision: to make Hondas more prestigious than before, like this - to make it easier to navigate - in the style of Audis. Even in the end with the price. The desire and intent was quite clearly expressed both in words and in the published price list, which means that the Hond Times said goodbye a decade and a half ago. Since then, we have been recalling these most popular Civics; those that were technically excellent, almost without exception sporty and rounded at an affordable price.

But these Civics were also gray and "plastic". If you sit in the new Civic, nothing will remind you of the old ones: no colors, no shapes, no materials. Not even the smallest button on the dashboard. Just a name on the back of the body. And - when you are right on the street - not the slightest detail of the exterior. I dare say this is the first Honda with really good shape inside and out. Even those Hondas (such as the Accord) that we talked about yesterday were the same, a little faded next to the Civic.

Another stereotype has fallen: in Europe only beautiful cars can draw. It was drawn by a Japanese man. Outside and inside. Nevertheless, the new Civic can be placed next to the most daring cars without a twinge of conscience. At least in this class. Megan too.

It's no secret: this Civic wants to convince you even before you see it live. And it works great for him. Then anyone who bores him enough will immediately ask the price. Acceptable? Before answering, I advise you to watch it live and (if possible) seduce yourself with it. You will not be disappointed.

Although the Civic has a sporty look, the shape is such that there is enough room to maneuver inside: the cabin is moved far forward, the drive mechanism is fully pressed into the nose of the car, the doors are large enough to get in and out. easy, and the trunk will surprise you - both in shape and volume, and in flexibility. If we exclude the raised rear part of the rear seat and folding the rear seat in one motion (again after a third), then there are no special innovations in the trunk, but it is still impressive. Also with access through the fifth door and a double bottom in it.

The measured cabin dimensions don't lie, but the Civic still has a great sense of spaciousness across all five seats. Then there is the inner form; The seats are neat and sporty, with not too pronounced, but quite noticeable lateral support, and they are covered with skin-friendly material. And of course: the dashboard. The unusual, completely original design of the appearance and presentation of information immediately pleases the eye, but the next moment it may raise doubts whether ergonomics suffer from this. In fact, the opposite is true: ergonomics and design go hand in hand. Grievances are hard to come by, of all the buttons the most subtle (if you mount the steering wheel this way) is the VSA off button.

Aside from being whimsical and possibly getting used to the way the information is presented, the driver will not complain, at least when it comes to basic information. This can only disturb the central part of the tachometer, which serves as an indicator of the distance traveled, information about the outside air temperature and the on-board computer (also as a warning screen, for example, for an open door), since the numbers on it seem slightly distorted. Controlling the dual data on-board computer using the buttons on the steering wheel is (only) one-way, but even that doesn't spoil the overall experience.

From the point of view of active safety, looking back is unpleasant: due to the fact that the glass is divided transversely, the rear view worsens, there is no wiper on it, which interferes on rainy days. Otherwise, the interior design also serves usability: there are plenty of drawers, and some of them are also really big, (effective) places for jars or small bottles, and there are eight of them. Spending time in this Civic is so easy, and only the automatic air conditioning will require some intervention. Sometimes it's cold inside at 21 degrees Celsius, and sometimes it's (too) warm at 18 degrees. But all it takes is turning a knob to set the core temperature.

In appearance, materials and especially interior design, the new Civic is without a doubt one of the most prestigious products. However, excellent support for sporty drivers remains. It sits quite low in the Civic, although not as low as you might be used to from a Civic ten years ago, the steering position is very well adjusted and the pedals are excellent. And not only because of the sporty look and aluminum, but mainly because of the design, shape and size. Pressing all three at once and with different strengths is a pleasure. Very nice, sporty, precise and direct, but perhaps too soft to understand, is the steering, and all together it clearly hints that you can drive this Honda in a very sporty way.

To start the engine, turn the key in the lock and press the red button to the left of the steering wheel. The button serves only the starter command, which means that you do not stop the engine with it (you still need to turn the key in the opposite direction), and the button is not smart enough to start from a short circuit. Click. Nothing special. Yes, you don't need to download using this button, but it is unobtrusive and cool. Right; you start the engine and the ride follows.

Just engaging first gear lets you know that the movements of the gear lever are short and precise, and the information you get from the lever suggests that again it speaks of a sporty feel. The engine also responds quite loudly. At start-up, it is known that the character of the engine and the character of the clutch are primarily focused on comfort, and when you add throttle in gear, you quickly find that the response to the command from the pedal is instantaneous, which means a good sporty mood. and less good for the comfort of passengers if the driver is not careful about it.

Engine! Every Honda has high expectations and this 1-liter engine is really good. But he is not omnipotent. It's good in the lower rev range, great in the middle, and at the top it seems louder than efficient. Of course, the character of the engine must also be partially visible through the gearbox or through its gear ratios. They are usually calculated for quite a long time, which is especially noticeable in fifth and sixth gears. This Civic reaches top speed (8 kilometers per hour on the speedometer) at 212 rpm in fifth gear, and sixth can no longer maintain that speed. This has nothing to do with driving with speed limits, but speaks to the nature of the drivetrain.

Thus, the engine performs best in the 3.000 to 5.000 engine rpm range, where it responds well and makes a very healthy noise. It may sound like an oxymoron, but true aficionados understand this well. In this rev range, the gears seem to overlap perfectly, so driving is really enjoyable, especially around corners. Steering wheel, gear shifting (especially downhill), acceleration, engine sound. ... The Civic is very close to what you feel and hear from any racing car with similar performance.

Below 3.000 rpm the engine does a good job of moderate driving (in the city or on country roads), and only driving fast with a loaded vehicle on uphill gradients when the engine makes a less noble sound (above 5.000 rpm) this is not the case. ... make it especially desirable. Moreover, the engine (including the wind on the body) is quite loud and therefore annoying. Therefore, bringing it to a state in which the electronics interrupts the ignition (6.900 rpm) is completely pointless, although it is also true that consumption does not increase as much as you think.

He never spends very little and does not sin much sinfully. For example, at a constant speed of 180 kilometers per hour, the trip computer promises a consumption of 15 liters per 100 kilometers, and our average consumption has never exceeded this value, even under the highest loads. It did not drop below 10 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers, even with the most gentle driving.

If you are a sportier model looking for a Civic like this, a few more notes: that the chassis is a little sportier than comfortable, that the road position is excellent (with not particularly pronounced leakage from the nose from the corner and with a slight tilt of the body). The hand brakes (if you like to play with them in corners) are perfectly placed (only the elbow support with a box that the elbow bumps into) and that the brakes don't overheat even after a really fast ride from Jezersko. And of course: that VSA stabilization can be turned off.

If you subtract some of the discomfort associated with chassis stiffness and the (too) quick engine response to the accelerator, such a Civic, despite all its sporty characteristics, is also a car that can be easily driven. unsportsmanlike driver. Or a driver who must be careful with the calm desires and demands of passengers. And when you consider its ease of use and all of the above, the Civic also turns out to be a great family car. Whether it's red, black or “just” silver.

Overall rating (348/420)

  • So, point by point, it loses enough of them to not merit the top rating, but in large part this is due to a conscious decision to express sportiness in the Civic. However, it can be a nice, helpful and friendly family car. And such that everyone turns to him!

  • Exterior (15/15)

Superb unparalleled design and superior workmanship comparable to significantly more expensive cars.

  • Interior (119/140)

The back bench is not very comfortable, the feeling of spaciousness is excellent, the trunk is very flexible ...

  • Engine, transmission (36

    / 40)

Slightly disturbed gear ratios are a little disturbing, otherwise the gearbox is technically excellent. The engine is very good up to two thirds of a turn.

  • Driving performance (87

    / 95)

One of those cars that is comfortable for the driver from the first moment. Great pedals and a slightly awkward chassis.

  • Performance (23/35)

Long transmission and engine character reduce performance. With this kind of power, we expect more.

  • Security (32/45)

Little weakness! Rear visibility is rather limited ... that's all. Okay, the headlights are not halogen and do not light up when cornering.

  • Economy

Comparatively good fuel consumption compared to our acceleration. Very good guarantee and finally the price.
