Honda announces it will only sell electric vehicles by 2040

Honda is joining the EV manufacturing trend and has already shared its EV strategy starting in 2035.

New CEO Honda, Toshihiro Mibe, said that starting from the year 100, the company aims for 2040% sales of electric vehicles in North America. Moving towards this, the company set goals: 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2035.

Honda says it's not just focusing on battery electric vehicles, despite big charging ambitions in the near future, and that the strategy includes fuel cells as well as a wider push for hydrogen to support the electric grid.

So far, Honda has only mass-produced one specially built Extremely Cute electric car and hasn't even sold it in the United States. For a car with a relatively limited range of 124 miles, this is still highly desirable and seems to have defined Honda's aesthetic for the future.

But this new ambition comes along with e: Architecture platform promise from 2025, which will become Honda's own platform in the future, and has also partnered with GM to build electric vehicles on its Ultium platform.

Unsurprisingly, the ads, while reflecting what will likely be the first place selling electric batteries for at least a few years, also mention hydrogen. The Japanese government has big ambitions for hydrogen, and the country's automakers wanted to reflect that, with Toyota equally dedicated to H2.

Ad Honda is including fuel cell vehicles in its electrification strategy., after his faltering attempts to get it to work with his Clarity sedan.

The infrastructure for hydrogen isn't there yet, which has made most of the schemes frustratingly short for what should have been a great mileage extender for electric vehicles, but Honda's announcement also includes a response to that.

The company is planning a "multi-energy path" that will include pushing hydrogen as a grid solution, and Honda is looking at infrastructure as part of that. If this is serious, then we could see a very interesting deployment in North America to fulfill the ambition.

The automaker's strategy is reflected in equally ambitious plans for 100% electrification of Honda's domestic market in Japan.
