Hyundai i40 Sedan 1.7 CRDi HP Style

With its progress, the Korean brand has surpassed the sensibility of the average car user. This is probably not the case for our readers, but not everyone reads Auto Magazine because they are not interested in cars more than enough to transport them back and forth. Then they look at the i40 like a calf in a box (or whatever). It is understandable, because through the eyes of someone who changes a car for ten years, the times of Accents and Ponies are not so far away.

Printing and billboards are one thing, reality is another. I40 is beautiful even for four eyes? Definitely. It's becoming increasingly clear that all Hyundai models follow a consistent design language, and this is very noticeable in the i40, especially at the front. The fact that the car is really drawn correctly is evidenced by the fact that we, together with the company, began to find out that more than 17-inch wheels would fit on it. Although ... Do we agree that the van version is more pleasing to the eye?

Interior design deserves fewer excellent ratings, but we still give it a good grade: the person feels good in it, and they never have problems finding a switch or understanding what the thing is for. No less good (clear, informative) classic gauges with analog speed and tachometer counters and a large LCD screen between them. Sits slightly higher (for a sedan), the seats are decent and with (for a sedan) ample lateral support, ample room and good support for the left leg, and the spaciousness in the cabin is generally impressive even for rear passengers. , and between the knees and the back of the front seat there is, uh, enough space.

Ideal car? Unfortunately no. Two little things that cast a shadow over the i40 have to do with the otherwise well-functioning (knock-free) automatic transmission. When the driver wants to command him with his ears on the steering wheel, he encounters very plastic feedback. When manually moving the shift lever back and forth, it will get even worse and insensitive "feedback": it feels like we've dipped it in margarine. There is no "click". Understand?

If you're not looking for vehicle speakers, then ignore this criticism of calmness. Like the next one tied to the steering gear. Like the gear lever, it is too soft, indirect and therefore not suitable for drivers who like the feel of the car. Activating the sports program with the sports button does not help much, only the gearbox will stay in one gear longer. Yes, competitors are one step ahead in terms of driving dynamics.

We are going slowly. Everything is the way the CPP dictates and how we were taught at the driving school. After such a trip on the Ljubljana-Kochevye route, the on-board computer showed an average fuel consumption of only 5,6 liters per hundred kilometers, and the average test was not much higher. We had to travel 932 kilometers for the container to mature for a fresh 67 liters, which is less than 7,2 liters per XNUMXth. With a good six liters on average, driving is easy, which is a good indicator for such a large car with an automatic transmission.

In the name of the test car, you can see the abbreviation HP, which stands for "high power" and a maximum output of 100 kilowatts, which is 15 more than the LP can handle. Without testing it, we suspect that the LP is at its performance limit, and 136 "horsepower" HP will be enough for normal limousine use, even for the tireless 150 kilometers per hour. Price difference between LP and HP? One thousand two hundred euros.

We were also worried about the fact that the multimedia center does not know how to automatically turn off the music when reversing and that after washing the windshield, water flows for some time along the lower left part of the windshield after the wipers stop working. Little things, you might say, but little things like that when we compare with competitors, we run out of positive comments that would put the i40 first in the class.

In the days of Pony, did you ever think that this brand is worth comparing to the best?
