There are several types of tires on the market that are installed on car rims. They can be divided into:

  • summer;
  • winter;
  • all Seasons;
  • tread;
  • asymmetric;
  • symmetric;
  • semi-smooth, smooth;
  • low profiles

Among them, asymmetric tires take their place. What do we know about them?

What is an asymmetric car tire?

This type of tire also has internal divisions. There are two types of protector here:

  • external (outside);
  • inside.

As if the surface of the tire consists of two seemingly incompatible elements. Paradoxically, however, these parts complement each other very well. 

What does an asymmetric tire tread look like?

All asymmetric tires have treads. As a rule, the pages on which this template is placed are correctly signed. This makes it possible to recognize the mount on the rim and the wheel on the hub. How to check asymmetric tires? The external tire marking is located on the outside of each wheel. Its tread usually has straight slots. Responsible for maintaining grip on dry surfaces. The inner side has a tread adapted to drain water and prevent hydroplaning.

How to put asymmetric rubber on the rim?

The tire pages are signed so that there is no mistake when trying on tires at the vulcanizing plant. This can have serious consequences while driving. The rule is that asymmetrical tires with lettering are mounted inside the wheel arch. However, the bead and the inscription on the outside must be visible after putting the wheels on the hub. In this case, you can be sure that all tires are installed correctly.

Asymmetrical summer and winter tires

The vast majority of asymmetric tires are designed for summer driving. Why? The reason is simple. Two types of tread that do not have a designated direction of rotation will perform poorly in snow and slush. Asymmetric tires are mainly used in summer tyres, i.e. tires adapted to driving in spring, summer and autumn conditions. Asymmetric winter tires are rare due to the nature of this type of tire.

Asymmetric tire - direction of rotation

As a rule, no direction of rotation is specified for this type of product. Thus, the tread modeled in asymmetric tires allows the wheels to be freely changed from the same side of the car. However, you should not change the position of the wheel from right to left and vice versa. The most important thing when assembling is to adhere to the markings on the tire profile. Asymmetric tires cannot be installed backwards. What if someone makes a mistake? What are the consequences?

Incorrectly installed asymmetric tire - consequences

When the inscription inside is visible from the front, you can be sure that the elements were mixed up during assembly on the curing unit. What are the consequences? When driving calmly on a dry surface, you may only feel an increased level of noise emitted by the wheels. It gets worse when turning fast. Then you can see the lack of adhesion. Worst of all will be when you ride in the rain on such poorly installed asymmetric tires.

Who are asymmetric tires for?

Stable cornering, no slippage on wet roads and confident driving are all important in sports cars. And it is in such tires that they are most often shod. They are also very willingly used by manufacturers of sports versions of some models and even owners of middle-class cars. Wherever performance is important but there is no room for very expensive sporting goods, asymmetric tires are the right choice.

Where can asymmetric tires come in handy?

You may be surprised, but it's not just sports driving. Many drivers on highways or bypasses skid around corners. How does this happen when the asphalt is dry? Most often, tires are to blame for this state of affairs. As you know, asymmetric tires are good not only on straight roads. This will also ensure cornering stability whether wet or dry. Are you going on long trips? Get asymmetric tires.

Are symmetrical tires worse than asymmetric ones?

Such a statement would be detrimental to these tire models. Why? The symmetrical tread pattern in tires has been produced almost from the very beginning of the tire industry. These tires also have great advantages:

  • provide lower fuel consumption;
  • they are relatively quiet;
  • they are relatively inexpensive.

Benefits of Using Symmetrical Busbars

Symmetrical tires are still used in city cars and lower segments. These cars are not high performance or even sporty. They are designed for a quiet safe ride. They also need to be fuel efficient, with symmetrical tires delivering lower fuel consumption. They usually don't make too much noise and are also relatively cheap. The protector in them is erased rather slowly, so there will be no problems with it.

Asymmetric vs directional tires - which one is better?

It depends on driving conditions. Why do most manufacturers decide to produce asymmetric summer tires instead of winter ones? They know that a directional tread works much better in slush and snow. That is why asymmetric tires are chosen in summer, and directional tires in winter. However, this does not apply to drivers who own sports cars. For driving on the highway, tires are selected for specific conditions.

Symmetric or asymmetric tire - which one to choose?

It all depends on what car you have. For small vehicles that are mainly used for city driving, symmetrical tires will be optimal. Of course, you can choose asymmetric tires for them, but you won't get diametrically better performance with them. All passenger cars with a little more power can drive asymmetric models with confidence. This is especially true for cars of those owners who like to take turns faster. This type of tire is also great for long routes in various weather conditions.

Are you having trouble finding asymmetric tires? Most likely not, because most manufacturers offer them. They are also not much more expensive than other popular models. This type of tire has its advantages and works great in almost any season. The exception is, of course, winter, for which asymmetric tires are not suitable.
