Ireland turns old phone boxes into electric car chargers

A new use for outdated phone booths is coming and in the future this could be a very viable alternative around the world.

With the advent of the mobile phone, phone booths they are outdated. Perhaps no one thought about what to do with all these boxes and their infrastructure, but Ireland is applying adaptive reuse well-placed telephone booths, turning them into chargers for electric vehicles.

Irish telecommunications company Air and electric vehicle charging network EasyGo will replace 180 phone booths with fast charging points for electric vehicles. EasyGo will use fast DC chargers developed by the Australian company Tritium.

Jerry Cash, director of EasyGo, explains the reason behind the innovative collaboration:

“We have a culture of traveling to cities and convenient places. Usually telephone booths are located in such places. And that's what we want to do, make the process of charging a car simple, convenient and safe for people."

EasyGo currently has over 1,200 charging points in Ireland., and the locations of the electric vehicle charging stations to be put into operation under this initiative will be announced in consultation with local authorities.

Ireland's 2030 Climate Action Plan calls for 936,000 electric vehicles on the road.
