Fixing ABS errors

Diagnostics of the Wabco ABS system by reading ABS light codes for GAZ vehicles.

Accurately identifying and troubleshooting the electrical components of an ABS brake requires that such work be carried out by professionals who are proficient with a personal computer, knowledge of basic electrical concepts, and an understanding of simple electrical circuits.

After turning the key of the starting system and the instrument switch to position "I", the ABS malfunction indicator should light up for a while (2 - 5) seconds, and then go out if the control unit has not detected ABS brake errors. When the ABS control unit is turned on for the first time, the ABS malfunction indicator goes out when the vehicle reaches a speed of approximately 7 km / h, if no active errors are detected.

If the ABS malfunction indicator does not turn off, diagnose the electrical components of the ABS brake to identify problems. ABS does not work during diagnosis.

To start the diagnostic mode, turn the ignition and instrument switch to the "I" position. Press the ABS diagnostic switch for 0,5-3 seconds.

After the ABS diagnostic switch button is released, the ABS fault indicator will illuminate for 0,5 seconds, indicating that the diagnostic mode has been started. In this case, if the ABS control unit detects a new error that appeared during the reading, or if the diagnostic key is pressed for more than 6,3 seconds, the system exits the diagnostic mode. Pressing the ABS diagnostic switch for more than 15 seconds detects an interruption of the ABS fault indicator.

If only one active error was registered when the ignition and instrument switch was moved to the "I" position, then the ABS control unit will issue only this error. If several active errors are registered, the ABS control unit will only issue the last registered error.

If no active errors are detected when switching the start system and instrument switch, when the diagnostic mode is turned on, errors that are not currently present in the system (passive errors) will be displayed. The passive error output mode ends after the last error recorded in the memory of the electronic unit is output.

Errors are displayed on the ABS malfunction indicator as follows:

ABS malfunction indicator light on for 0,5 seconds: confirmation of running diagnostic mode.

  • Pause 1,5 seconds.
  • the first part of the error code.
  • Pause 1,5 seconds.
  • 2nd part of the error code.
  • Pause 4 seconds.
  • the first part of the error code.
  • etc.…

To exit the diagnostic mode, turn the ignition system switch and instruments to the "0" position.

Automatic debugging.

A stored error is automatically cleared from memory if no errors have occurred in that system component for the next 250 hours.

Troubleshooting ABS 00287 Volkswagen Golf Plus

As promised, I'm starting a series of articles about the most common errors in the main vehicle systems. These bugs, as they say, are waiting in the wings. Sooner or later, every owner of a certain brand faces them. I have a friend who is a doctor with 40 years of experience. I don’t know if this expression is common, but I first heard it from Doc: “We will all die of cancer ... if we live to see it.”

These are the errors: they are inevitable in the operation of the car. I will say more - most of these faults are programmed by the manufacturer at the design stage of the car. This is in case car owners often go to the service and change the car when they get tired of visiting the service station. Let's move on to the details.

ABS system error 00287

The anti-lock braking system of a car is one of the most capricious. In fact, the sensors and the cables that connect them are under extremely harsh operating conditions. Models of recent years of production are equipped with anti-skid systems, assistance with descent and ascent, directional stability and other bells and whistles. All this further complicates the ABS algorithm. The system includes mechanical wheel speed control zones that can become clogged or destroyed when pebbles or sand enter.

I will describe a specific case, which was a couple of days ago. I often help my acquaintances and friends remotely. There is a constant queue at the service station, vanity. Many of my friends have diagnostics for their car brands. It's inexpensive, a 9 year old can learn to operate and it can save a lot of time and money.

It is worth buying not the simplest ELM327 device, which gives error codes only for the engine and transmission, but a more complex one (for example, like Vasya Diagnostic for VAG cars).

In short, a friend in a neat ABS error caught fire and then ASR. Eye before the passage of ITV. Without diagnostics, looking for the cause of a malfunction is like a needle in a haystack in complete darkness. He was resting in the field, but the diagnosis was "with him." Error code 00287 (right rear wheel rotation sensor) was displayed. A friend called with a question from Chernyshevsky: “What should I do?”

1. Remove the wheel speed sensor connector. On the Golf Plus and many other models of the VAG group, the connector is located directly on the sensor. Installed from inside the hub. It is easy to find on the wire that goes to the sensor.

2. Ring the sensor. I already described this procedure in Burum. Let me remind you:

  • take a simple multimeter;
  • translate it to the control limit of the diode;
  • connect the multimeter wires first in one direction, then in the other.

In one of the directions there should be infinite resistance (the device will have 1 in the highest order), in the other - about 800 ohms, as if "approximately". If so, the ABS sensor is most likely electrically good, meaning the winding is not shorted or damaged. But maybe the kernel is corrupted. If the sensor is more likely to work, continue.

3. Remove the sensor. It is fixed with a bolt. Unscrewing is easy, but getting it out is a problem. We must proceed with caution. Perhaps the sensor is not at fault. A friend suffered and ten minutes later sent a photo via Viber.

Apparently, the perpetrator was caught red-handed. There is a beveled end of the sensor. This happens sometimes when sand, small pebbles get into the tracking zone. Dacha is the perfect place for such a situation. The sensor itself is inexpensive (about 1000 rubles in the Eastern version).

ABS tracking ring

That's all in this place, you have to swear at the manufacturer. In many car models, a metal comb (gear) is used as a tracking zone. Metal teeth, passing through the ABS sensor, excite an electrical impulse in it, which then goes to the ABS control unit. The Golf Plus (and many other brands) use a magnetic ring. So okay, rubber-based. In golf, it is ferromagnetic, the design is flimsy. This is how the ring looks new.

But how does it wear.

Fixing ABS errors

The metal edge was swollen due to rust and began to rub against the sensor. According to a friend, he still began to fall apart and hang out.

Fixing ABS errors

In a word, the picture is unpleasant. In fact, there are four options for solving the problem:

  1. Buy a new ring. In Moscow it is still possible, but in the regions there is a problem. In addition, it is not easy to install.
  2. Buy a used ring. But it will soon fall apart, perhaps already in the process of installation.
  3. Install the used hub assembly. How?
  4. Buy a new central unit. Its cost is 1200 rubles.

Fixing ABS errors

I do not advertise, but the last option is not the worst.

I will return to history. A friend bought a new central block, installed it in an hour. Replaced the old ABS sensor. Drove 20 meters and the error disappeared. It still remained in the memory of the control unit, but the indicators went out and the ABS unit worked in normal mode. It’s better, of course, to work hard for a couple of minutes and correct errors, but you can go check right now.

Bosch ABS block defects and how to fix them

Brakes are one of the most critical systems in a car, and not every car company can produce them adequately. Bosch ESP ABS units are recognized as one of the most reliable in the world. Therefore, Bosch 5.3 ABS blocks were installed on various models of Toyota, Jaguar, Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes, etc.

However, Bosch ABS units also fail.

The main malfunctions of Bosch ABS units

1. The lamp indicating a malfunction of the ABS unit lights up intermittently or stays on.

2. When diagnosing, one or more wheel speed sensors determine the malfunction.

3. Pressure sensor error.

4. Booster pump error. The booster pump runs constantly or does not work at all.

5. The block does not come out of diagnostics. The ABS fault light is on all the time.

6. Diagnostics shows an error in one or more intake / exhaust valves.

7. After repair, the car does not see the AUDI ABS unit.

In this case, the following error codes can be read:

01203 - Electrical connection between the ABS and the instrument panel (no connection between the ABS unit and the instrument panel)

03-10 - No signal - Intermittent (no communication with the ABS control unit)

18259 - Communication error between the engine control unit and the ABS unit via the CAN bus (P1606)

00283 - Front left wheel speed sensor-G47 incorrect signal

00285 - Incorrect signal from the right front wheel speed sensor-G45

00290 - Rear left wheel speed sensor-G46 incorrect signal

00287 - Right rear wheel speed sensor-G48 incorrect signal

Often, several attempts are made to repair a broken ABS unit, for example, a BMW E39, since these units love to fix everything in a row - from car owners to "Kulibins" in car services.

In the photo - the BOSCH ABS block with a valve body and fasteners, and separately - the electronic part of the BOSCH ABS block

Therefore, there is an opinion that the repair of these blocks is unreliable and in most cases does not end successfully. Although this is true only when repairing the block “on the knee”, without observing the technologies, since only the consequence of the defect is eliminated, and not its cause.

You can find a lot of information on the web about how contacts get into blocks. Theoretically, we can assume that they can be soldered and everything will work. Problems associated with breakage of aluminum conductors occur in 50-60% of cases and are not complex defects of this block, and soldering of ceramic plates is unacceptable, and such a “repair” will not last long.

It is difficult to carry out repairs on your own or in the conditions of a conventional car service, if it helps, then, as a rule, not for long.

In any case, it is cheaper to repair a block on production equipment with high quality than to buy a used one, paying, at first glance, not a very high price. After all, you need to install it on a car, in relation to it, for example, an Audi A6 C5 or a VW ABS unit, as a result, you can get the same defect.
