What are drain augers made of?

| The coil consists of an inner wire and an outer spring. | |
| A steel wire rope runs through the center of the reel for added strength and stability. It consists of many thin wires wound together to form a strong yet flexible rope. |
 | The outer spring can sometimes be doubled for even more strength. The spring form allows the rope to move, and due to its ductility and strength, high carbon steel is used. The coil is heat treated to further improve its properties, making it ideal for pipe maneuvering and clearing blockages. |
 | As with most things, the quality of a product is reflected in the price. The less expensive drain auger may not have received the same standard heat treatment as the more expensive version. Cheaper tools are also less likely to include a double spring, and sometimes even a cable is missing. |
 | While these features improve the quality of drain augers by preventing rust, kinks, and knots, that doesn't mean those that don't have them will be completely inadequate tools. You can judge your needs by how often the instrument is used, and by the severity and location of the blockage (for example, external drains will be more difficult to maneuver). Some cheap models will get tangled and stuck when faced with a lot of clogged hair, so be sure to weigh the costs against the benefits. |
