Rule materials
	aluminum Aluminum is quite light Aluminum, once oxidized, no longer corrodes
	Carbon steel Carbon steels with a high enough carbon content can be quite strong. Some combination squares are made from medium carbon steel.

	Stainless steel Stainless steel is rust/corrosion resistant
Head materials

	cast iron Cast iron is strong (though brittle) Cast iron is prone to rust but can be protected with a coating such as paint.

	It is very rare to find a combined square with a plastic square head.
	Alternatively, lock nuts can be made from brass.
	Sometimes "matte chrome" may be used, especially on the rules; this reduces the effect of glare, which can be a problem when working in bright environments. The user can then see the readings more clearly. You can see other finishes.
