Jaguar I-Pace will test wireless charging in a taxi fleet

The Norwegian capital has launched an initiative called "ElectriCity", which aims to make its taxi fleet emission-free by 2024. As part of the scheme, tech firm Momentum Dynamics and charger firm Fortnum Recharge are installing a range of wireless, high-performance taxi charging modules.

Jaguar Land Rover will supply 25 I-Pace models to the Oslo cabonline taxi company and says the newly refreshed electric SUV has been designed with Momentum Dynamic wireless charging capability. Engineers from the British firm took part in testing the charging system.

The wireless charging system consists of several charging plates, each rated for 50-75 kW. They are mounted under the asphalt and are marked with parking lines for passengers to pick up / drop off. The auto-energized system is said to charge up to 50 kW in six to eight minutes.

Placing chargers in places where taxis are often queued for passengers eliminates the need to spend time charging during working hours and allows you to regularly recharge the charge during the day, increasing the time that they can potentially travel.

Jaguar Land Rover Director Ralf Speth said:

“The taxi industry is the ideal test bed for wireless charging and indeed long-distance operations across the board. A safe, energy efficient and powerful wireless charging platform will prove to be very important for electric fleets as the infrastructure is more efficient than fueling a conventional car. "
