Jaguar XE vs Jaguar XF: used car comparison

Jaguar XE and Jaguar XF are the British brand's most popular sedans. They are both luxurious, comfortable and fantastic to drive. But what is best for you when buying used? Our guide explains.

In this article, we are mainly looking at XE and XF models sold new since 2015. There is also an older version of the XF sold from 2007 to 2015.

Size and Style

All Jaguar sedans have a two-letter name beginning with "X" and the second letter indicates the size of the model - the earlier this letter is in the alphabet, the smaller the car. So XE is smaller than XF. Its length is about 4.7 meters (15.4 feet), which is about the same size as the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. The XF is about 5.0 meters (16.4 feet) long, making it about the same size as the Mercedes E-Class and Volvo S90.

The XE and XF have the characteristic sporty look of all Jaguar cars, and in some ways they are very similar, especially at the front. It's easier to tell them apart if you look at their rear because the XF's trunk extends beyond the rear wheels. There is also an estate version of the XF called the XF Sportbrake which adds a longer roof, making the boot larger and more versatile.

Both vehicles have been upgraded since 2015 with new features and design changes inside and out. The XE had a major update for 2019, with new exterior lights and bumpers, and a much more modern interior look. The XF received similar changes for 2020.

Interior and technology

As with the exterior, the interior of the XE and XF look the same, but there are differences. Quite obviously, the XF has a strip of metal or wood trim on the dashboard that helps create an even more luxurious look. Both cars have a central touchscreen display for the infotainment system, with the latest versions having an additional touchscreen at the bottom that controls heating, ventilation and other functions.

The technology has been updated several times over the years, and the infotainment system has received more features and a more responsive touchscreen. The latest system called Pivi was introduced in 2020 and it's something to look into if you can - it's a big step forward.

All XE and XF vehicles have a long list of other standard features, including satellite navigation, climate control, cruise control and smartphone connectivity. Many also have leather seats and high-tech features like adaptive cruise control and a head-up display that projects speedometer and satellite navigation instructions onto the windshield.

Luggage compartment and practicality

Being a smaller car, the XE is not as spacious inside as the XF. Indeed, it is not as spacious as similar vehicles such as the BMW 3 Series; There's plenty of room up front, but the rear seats can feel cramped for adults. However, kids fit better and the XE has two sets of Isofix child seat mounts in the back. The trunk is a decent size, with enough room for a couple sets of golf clubs.

The XF is much roomier, with more room for four adults on par with key competitors like the Mercedes E-Class. Kids should have all the space they need and, again, there are two sets of Isofix mounts. The 540-litre trunk is sufficient for the needs of most people, and four large suitcases can easily fit in it. The rear seat folds down if you need to carry longer loads. But if you want even more, there's the XF Sportbrake wagon, which can handle bulkier loads thanks to its longer roof and squarer rear end.

What is the best way to ride?

Jaguars often feel great behind the wheel, with a combination of comfort and enjoyment that few other sedans can match. The XE and XF more than live up to this and are just as good on a long motorway or city trip as they are on a winding country road.

A wide range of petrol and diesel engines are available for the XE and XF. Even the low power options provide responsive and fast acceleration when you need it. The more powerful options are great fun, but they drain fuel quickly. Most models have a smooth automatic transmission and some have all-wheel drive for more safety in bad weather.

There isn't really much of a choice between the XE and XF in how they handle, but if you really enjoy driving, you'll probably prefer the XE. It's smaller and lighter, so it feels a little more responsive.

What is better to own?

It's somewhat surprising, given the size difference, that the XE and XF deliver similar fuel economy. According to official figures, the XE can deliver up to 32-39 mpg with a petrol engine and 46-55 mpg with a diesel engine. Gasoline models of the larger XF can get up to 34-41 mpg, while diesel models can get 39-56 mpg, depending on which engine is installed.

These figures indicate affordable excise taxes on vehicles (car tax), but insurance can be a little high because the XE and XF bodies are made of lightweight aluminum, which is harder to repair than steel.

Safety and reliability

Euro NCAP safety experts gave the XE and XF a full five-star rating. Both have a host of driver safety features, including automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist. Some models also have more advanced features such as blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control that can make driving safer and less stressful.
