Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD A / T Limited

Jeep, the car that won the Second World War, also has a great tradition and a big name. To this day, it remains synonymous with SUVs, to the point that many times when we talk about such vehicles, we still miss the Jeep instead of the SUV.

Looking back, this is, of course, a logical consequence of history, but even here it is believed that winning is easier than holding back. More and more Jeep has to fight for its place among more and more competitors as SUVs and SUVs become more and more fashionable.

Which direction is correct? Follow trends or adhere to traditional values set by him? Following trends would mean Jeep (including the Cherokee) would have to soften, get a self-supporting body of large (especially internal) dimensions, individual suspension, permanent (or at least quasi-permanent) four-wheel drive, throw out the gearbox, get softer engine support and more effective protection. from noise, as well as everything else that most competitors offer.

Keeping with tradition, however, means Jeep remains Jeep, with only timely improvements. The market and its economy, of course, rule the first, but fortunately, the person is still not objective enough or too subject to his emotions. Therefore, even jeeps are still cool cars.

The previous Cherokee still looks beautiful with its awkward boxy shape, but even this one, which is no longer as new, is simply adorable and childishly playful; especially with its front eyes, but also with the characteristic bonnet in front of the engine, with wide rims around the wheels, with disproportionately short rear side doors and additional darkened rear windows; such are now recognizable among many. Which is very important.

What sense would a Jeep make in this world if it was inspired by European and Japanese products? Since this is not the case, there is no spatial surprise inside, and some of the less important things to manage are still American-style.

Turn on the air conditioner only in certain positions in the direction of airflow, the on-board computer is located on the ceiling above the mirror, there is also a compass and information about the outside temperature, and the clock is right on the radio screen. And again, this is not all that can be found in European cars.

Even if not, the interior is not the one to set landmarks. The seats (and steering wheel) are indeed leather, but they have a short seating area. Well, it's not even that short in centimeters, but its surface is smooth, "inflated", which makes the stock slide forward. But even after several hours of sitting, the body does not get tired.

Also a bit annoying is the heavily widened front tunnel (drive!), Which doesn't even bother the driver as much as the navigator, and the driver will miss (any) left foot support more, especially since this Cherokee is equipped with an automatic transmission.

Oddly, it also seems like the dash from the bottom of the windshield to the cabin is very short, but - if occupant safety is at stake - the Cherokee earned four NCAP stars. Partly because of the very tiring "pink-pink" warning sound about the unbuckled belt, but still.

Not very big, this Indian. Even in the seats and even more so in the trunk, which, as one would expect, will be larger on the outside. However, in one movement, it simply expands by a third (the backrest together with the seat of the back bench), only the end surface of the bottom is slightly inclined in the part of the back bench. It might also be troubling that a third of the part is behind the driver, but it's impressive if you open the rear window upward away from the tailgate.

Americans probably don't look at it that way, but on this continent (such) diesel is a reasonable solution. It is true that from the cabin it is old-fashioned: in the cold it takes a long warm-up and passes with shaking and rumbling, but in combination with gear ratios it is tenacious enough for urban, suburban, even for highways and especially for off-road driving. .

In terms of volume, the performance of such a motorized and such large SUV is indeed below expectations, but it can easily cover those 150 kilometers and at the same time long enough, since the engine is far from approaching the forbidden speed range. In addition, the noise in the cabin is not as disturbing as the measured decibels might suggest, but of course this is especially dependent on the individual tolerance thresholds.

It's really nice to drive. It has a pleasant short driving radius and responds quickly to accelerator pedal commands. In addition, the brake pedal feels very good, and the steering wheel is servo-assisted and "fast", which you can find when you take advantage of the high torque on the rear wheels.

Transmission? Good (American) classic! That is: without high intelligence, with three gears and with an additional "overdrive", which in practice means four gears in the end, but with a click when shifting to idle and with a slightly inaccurate gear lever.

Sounds a lot worse than it actually is, especially after a few hours of driving when you get used to this type of character. Then the speed of the engine-clutch-transmission combination is impressive, which means quick response from a standstill or when overtaking. From time to time, the transmission will need to manually shift gears if you want to squeeze as much out of the car as possible or if you are going to drive further down a steeper incline. That's all.

Last but not least, the terrain. Not following current fashion trends, the Cherokee has a chassis, plug-in all-wheel drive, downshift, very good automatic differential locks on the rear axle, and a rigid axle for the rear wheels. Since it is not very fast, the tires can also be more adapted to the terrain: mud, snow. Only those who like (or if necessary) controllably go off-road will be able to assess its off-road capabilities.

A solid chassis and good drive, if the driver has dexterous hands, will take him far, high and deep, and eventually too. For all the joy, there can be only one sad thing: the gracefully varnished bumpers are no match for what could amaze them.

So I say: good luck that Jeep is Jeep. Anyone who does not like it has a number of such and other "fakes" with technically more perfect household characteristics. however, when you factor in the image and wider usability, which also includes more demanding terrain, it doesn't have many competitors. Well done, Jeep!
