2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L: How To Handle It Better

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee L is one of the brand's most famous SUVs. However, the new mechanical configuration allows for more comfortable handling on different types of terrain.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been a two-row SUV, but now new Jeep Grand Cherokee L it's here, and it's not only the first Grand Cherokee with a third row of rear seats, but it's completely redesigned. It's still one-piece and has an aluminum hood, but a lot has changed in the newest iteration of this American icon.

What are the main innovations?

Beyond fascia and comfort there are many engineering improvements which allow this vehicle to climb a steep rocky slope or descend into a water barrier. An important element of this puzzle is new multi-link front and rear suspension system with virtual ball joint.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee L was recently tested at the brand's Chelsea proving ground near Detroit, Michigan. The track set up for the purpose was challenging enough to impress, and the front camera made a huge impression as it reached the top of the hill with the SUV's nose pointing skyward. Overall, the ride was nimble and luxurious, a combination you don't get in a Gladiator or Gladiator.

Chief Engineer Tom Seal at launch, he told the media group that there was quite a lot of pressure to redesign this badge and that they wanted to "respect all seven slots". The Jeep Grand Cherokee L was rebuilt from the ground up on a new WL chassis to replace the outgoing WK2; The WL is 15.1 inches longer and has a wheelbase seven inches longer to accommodate three rows. The whole project was a challenge, including engineering upgrades.

For the first time in a Grand Cherokee, the front axle is bolted directly to the engine to reduce weight and improve vehicle dynamics. The new multi-link suspension has been upgraded front and rear with custom ball joints that, according to Jeep Cherokee L chief engineer, Phil Grado, says it was not in vain.

How important are ball joints in this model?

Ball joints play an important role in the steering and suspension of the Grand Cherokee L. connecting knuckles with short and long levers. Each link focuses on handling or comfort, eliminating the need to share conflicting claims; separation of drive and comfort link functions improves overall steering isolation and efficiency. Even if you don't have mechanical tilt, seeing how the ball joint performs poorly will help you understand how important this component is to a safe and comfortable ride.

Successful configuration

With the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L package, the ball joint has moved to a virtual point. In the past, the turning point was inside the car, between the wheels. Placing a virtual ball outside of the wheels gives the car more lateral stability..

“By moving the virtual ball further, the car becomes less sensitive to road bumps and driver vibrations, which also provides additional stability and efficiency of the central steering,” said Grado.

Having spent time with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L both on the road and in the mud, it's safe to say that the edges of this car have softened. In the popular three-row SUV segment, this update represents all seven slots quite well.
