Tesle's packaging plant decided to test the thickness of Tesla Model 3 paint at factories in Fremont (California, USA) and Shanghai (China). He also compared how the Tesla Model 3 performed against other premium competitors, including Audi and Mercedes, and his older sister, the Tesla Model S.

The film is full of valuable information, so you should definitely watch it. The basic fact is the thickness of the original paint: it should be approximately 80 to 140-150 micrometers (0,08, 0,14-0,15 mm). Significantly higher values ​​on parts not exposed to pebbles mean that the vehicle has been repaired (painted).

And now the specifics:

  • steel thresholds under the door - an average of 310 microns in a Californian car and 340 microns in a Chinese model,
  • mask - 100-110 microns, without differentiation by factories,
  • the upper right part of the fender between the lamp and the hood was covered with a thinner layer of paint than the left, it is not known why,
  • steel rear trunk hood - an average of 110-115 microns, 115-116 microns on new models, 108-109 microns on older models and cars from China,
  • a fragment between the door and the rear wheel arch at the height of the wheel axle is 110-120 microns, for updated models it is slightly lower than 100 microns, a car from China is 85-90 microns.

To summarize: cars from China did not have a thicker paintwork, sometimes even thinner than cars from California. While paint quality on Shanghai models was significantly better... Its smoothness has been described as being similar to what we can find, for example, in modern BMW or other German manufacturers. The older Tesla Model 3, which came from California, had numerous defects in the paintwork, as our Reader, who gave the car for packaging, found out:

When it comes to varnish thicknessThe Tesla Model 3 also did not differ from its German competitors, including Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen. Peugeot's paintwork is slightly thinner. The thickness of the varnish also did not particularly depend on its color, all the colors were more or less the same. On the other hand, the Tesla Model S had slightly more paint than the Tesla Model 3.
