The term "coolant" is used to refer to coolant. The task of the coolant is to circulate in the engine compartment of the car, dissipating some of the heat generated during the combustion process. It flows through pipes or hoses into the radiator.

What does a radiator do?

The radiator is the cooling system in a car. It is designed to transfer heat from the hot coolant flowing through it to the air blown through it by a fan. Radiators work by pushing hot water out of the engine block through hoses that allow the heat of the coolant to dissipate. As the fluid cools, it returns to the cylinder block to absorb more heat.

The radiator is usually mounted at the front of the car behind the grill, allowing it to take advantage of the air intake that occurs while the car is moving.

How often should I add coolant?

In the event of a loss of coolant, it is important to replace the coolant as soon as possible. If there is not enough coolant in the radiator, it may not cool the engine properly, which can result in engine damage due to overheating. Loss of coolant is often first noticed when the car's thermometer reads a higher than average temperature. Typically, the cause of coolant loss is a leak. A leak can be either internal, such as a leaky gasket, or external, such as a broken hose or cracked radiator. An external leak is usually identified by a puddle of coolant under the vehicle. Loss of coolant can also be caused by a leaky or improperly closed radiator cap allowing overheated coolant to evaporate.

Failure to add coolant can result in catastrophic vehicle damage. If you notice that coolant needs to be constantly topped up, it's important to have a licensed mechanic inspect the cooling system to find out why coolant loss continues to occur.
