How often should the fuel system be checked?

Without fuel, an internal combustion engine will not start. For this reason, the parts used in the fuel system are designed to last and can withstand years of near-constant use. Some parts, such as the fuel filter, exist to extend the life of other parts of the fuel system. The fuel system should be checked regularly, but different parts of the system require different levels of maintenance.

What details need to be checked:

  • The fuel filter needs to be checked and replaced most often of all parts of the fuel system. It should be changed every 10,000-15,000 km.

  • Hoses that supply fuel to components in the engine compartment should be checked regularly, preferably at the time of professional servicing of the vehicle.

  • Fuel injectors should be checked annually, but if there are fuel delivery problems, they should be checked by a mechanic.

  • If fuel is leaking under the vehicle, the rigid fuel lines should be checked.

  • The fuel pump will last about 100,000 miles, but if it starts throwing fuel at the engine or isn't delivering enough fuel, it needs to be checked regardless of mileage.

  • The fuel tank will last at least 10 years. To prolong the life of your fuel tank, avoid water and excess moisture at all costs.

With regular inspections and maintenance, the fuel system will last a long time and ensure the stable operation of the car. Emissions control and other systems also depend on proper fuel delivery.
